[Bug 108720] Re: fiesty fawn - gnome panels not appearing from desk to desk
Hi, I don't know if you'ce solved this or not. I can confirm this bug as I just experienced it. I was just playing around with compiz and rebooted my computer. GNOMEs GL-settings are set to normal workspace-switching appearance. I've found a workaround (see bottom of this mesage). My details: From 'lspci': 00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03) My Ubuntu version: Ubuntu Feisty $ dpkg -l|grep compiz ii compiz 0.3.6-1ubuntu13 OpenGL window and compositing manager ii compiz-core0.3.6-1ubuntu13 OpenGL window and compositing manager ii compiz-extra 0.3.6.1-0ubuntu2 extra third party plugins for compiz ii compiz-gnome 0.3.6-1ubuntu13 OpenGL window and compositing manager - GNOME window d ii compiz-gtk 0.3.6-1ubuntu13 OpenGL window and compositing manager - Gtk window dec ii compiz-plugins 0.3.6-1ubuntu13 OpenGL window and compositing manager - plugins ii gnome-compiz-manager 0.10.3-0ubuntu1 Compiz Gnome Manager ii libgnome-compiz-manager0 0.10.3-0ubuntu1 Compiz Gnome Manager Gnome version: 2.18.1 My workaround is pretty simple. Just do: 1. Go into Main menu - System - Preferences - GL Desktop. 2. Uncheck the box Enable GL Desktop. 3. Check the box Enable GL Desktop. This workaround resets the number of workspaces I have as well as puts all my open windows in one and the same workspace. but that is another bug already reported. If I experience this again I could try to set number of workspaces to 1 and then increase to my normal of four. -- fiesty fawn - gnome panels not appearing from desk to desk https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/108720 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 108720] Re: fiesty fawn - gnome panels not appearing from desk to desk
Done some tests and as far as I can tell, this update solves at least something. Seems that improvements started showing after my previous post. Now panels and desktop icons don't disappear when switching desktops. There are a couple of issues, anyway: When I don't use cube rotation, windows disappear from desktop switcher applet, so it is only by guess that i can switch to the right desktop in case of many application opened, because the applet shows correctly the windows only on active desktop. The second issue is: when using the plain old desktop switcher (no cube) one can move windows between the desktop using the right-click menu, and this is the correct behaviour. When using cube, these menu options are missing and it is not so obvious how to move a window to another desktop. This is anyway stated in another bug (i don't remember exactly which one). -- fiesty fawn - gnome panels not appearing from desk to desk https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/108720 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Just tried now on Gutsy, sorry to say that I didn't see any improvement. [Bug 108720] Re: fiesty fawn - gnome panels not appearing from desk to desk
** Description changed: Binary package hint: metacity hiya, I am using ubuntu - feisty fawn - keeping it up to date with daily updates. a few times now, when I move from desk1 to desk2 the menus disappear. it could be that they are totally transparent, but you cannot click on them and there's no way to shutdown short of changing to console and killing processes. just letting you know + + Additional info found in duplicate : + + To provide some more info about this: + + - windows that are put on other desktops by the user (either by moving them to the next desktop or by making them show on all desktops) show up fine + - windows that should be on all desktops by default (gnome-panel, nautilus' desktop window) do not + + Also: + - logging in with a working WM (pre-ubuntu13 compiz, metacity) then upgrading to compiz-ubuntu13 and restarting the running WM works fine - the panel and the desktop show up fine + - logging in with compiz-ubuntu13 does not work fine + + So it seems like a problem with windows not being marked as being + visible on all desktops when they are first opened when they should be. + + Downgrading to compiz-ubuntu12 solves the problem.
Forgot to mention that i don't use cube rotation, since i find the compiz desktop switcher not good as plain gnome desktop switcher. For instance, i can't move a window from one workspace to another one, even with drag drop over desktop switcher (this might be related to #63208).
I have the same problem, on the same pc, with a long time ago installed Feisty 32bit, a fresh 64bit, and a Gutsy 32 bit. I have nvidia card using nvidia restricted drivers included in repositories. Gnome panels and/or desktop icons are only shown on workspace 1. On the other workspaces (i usually have 4 workspaces), i have them missing. Sometimes is missing only the top and bottom panel, sometime also desktop icons. This happens only when compiz is enabled. I never tried Beryl. To solve this, i have to disable and reenable desktop effects every time i login. -- fiesty fawn - gnome panels not appearing from desk to desk https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/108720 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 108720] Re: fiesty fawn - gnome panels not appearing from desk to desk
Not that I know of. I downloaded the beta when the kernel was .12 (now .15) I have kept the machine on daily updates. Machine is a plain semperon 1700+, nvidia agp 660gt Problem occurs regularly enough that I decided to report it. The problem seems to be time related - i.e. machine is idle, gone to screensaver but to standby or hibernation etc. Basically I can have the machine just sitting there with evolution. Everything works properly (I can load apps no problems and move them to other desks) but when I switch to another desk, there are no panels - balloon messages can appear (new song or email received) but I cannot click on the panel to see what it happening. I can alt+tab between open windows but I cannot get to menu's to do anything else. only way around this that I have found so far is, ctrl+alt+backspace or ctrl+alt+f1 and do a shutdown from the console. as a test to see if I have compiz, I ran it from a user xterm with --replace. it works but menu's have disappeared and I cannot close active windows without compiz now running. I will look into compiz to see what it is. - sorry but I havent been using linux much since the very early days and all the new stuff is unresearched. thanks for your interest so far. glenby On Mon, 2007-04-23 at 09:29 +, Sebastien Bacher wrote: Thank you for your bug.
