[Bug 1169984] Re: 3.8.0-18 HDMI audio regression: Either oops or opening device fails with -ENODEV

2013-05-20 Thread GonzO
If we're doing takeaway analysis here:

The first problem is that about a week before release, the -18 kernel
was released. Rather than being a simple ABI bump like the last few
kernels were, it contained a *large* number of cherry-picked patches
that contained a wide array of changes.

No kernel with that amount of code churn should ever be introduced to a
distro base a week before release. And in my experience, that's a first
for Ubuntu.

The second problem is that THIS bug was decided as the one all of the
others became duplicates of.  It downplays the severity of the defect;
this isn't just about losing HDMI in all relevant control panels, it's
about *being completely unable to get to a working GUI* (at least for
people using binary blob drivers). And while I reported the defect as
being THAT severe, that severity was lost when it got linked to a
lesser-severity defect.

If you take a high-severity defect and make it a duplicate of a lower
severity one, the source defect should have its severity raised.

The third problem is that this was reported a week before release, but
the flawed kernel line was released anyway. When hardware isn't working
(at best) or the machine isn't able to boot to a GUI (at worst), a
release note IMO isn't an adequate response. Rolling back to the last
kernel that worked would have been simpler, and easier.

Ubuntu keeps releasing new kernels, and every one re-breaks my HDMI
sound.

Thank goodness for Fabrizio and his comment #8. Although applying it
over and over again is becoming tedious.

Security is an important thing, but it is not the only important thing.

Do any Linux distros actually care about working audio? (Just asking
for, um, a friend.)

2013-05-19 Thread madbiologist
@Patrick - The workaround in the second paragraph of comment #6 should
persist after updating the kernel. However kernel 3.8.0-22.33 which is
currently in raring-proposed has merged back all changes which were in
3.8.0-20.31 and should have working HDMI sound. Comment #88 confirms
that this is the case. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for instructions on how
to enable and use proposed - just replace all instances of precise
with raring.

You can track the progress of the 3.8.0-22.33 kernel at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1180483

I too have been wondering how this was missed during pre-release testing
of Raring. Hopefully the testing of HDMI audio (according to the bug
description analog built-in audio is only broken on some machines) will
now become part of Ubuntu's standard testing procedures.

Re: [Bug 1169984] Re: 3.8.0-18 HDMI audio regression: Either oops or opening device fails with -ENODEV

To answer for my own part in this:

The regression went into the almost very latest kernel before the
release, so when the bug was discovered (I sent a patch for it the 18th
of April) it was very late - since new kernels require new images, new
installation tests on various hardware and so on, pressing the big red
panic button to redo all of that, is not to be taken lightly.

It's also hard to predict the scale of a bug - it doesn't happen for all
HDMI Audio cards, (I've never seen it on my own) so I didn't know how
many would actually be hit by this. In this case, when I saw all the
duplicates coming in, I first made sure this bug went into the release
notes (with help from Andy Whitcroft), and later, I wrote a letter to
the kernel team to highlight that many people were being hit, and asking
if there was anything I could do to help speed the process up [1]. The
only answer was [2].

On top of that we have just had a security bug which I believe is
relatively severe (the perf privilege escalation), causing the regular
updates to be delayed as a result.

Looking back, is it a matter of bad luck that this bug still is not
released into the -updates repository, or could the process of updating
kernels be improved? If you have constructive feedback on how the kernel
team's process of updating kernels could be improved, please contact the
kernel team - they have a mailing list as well as weekly IRC meetings.

fine so far. I update if the problem occurs again.

@David Henningsson: There's been a ton of HDMI related regressions in
Ubuntu 13.04 from 12.10. Do you know if this bug is related to HDMI
volume not being saved and the inability to autoswitch from headphones
to HDMI and vice versa?

Thanks David for your detailed reply. You certainly have been very
proactive on this issue. I think the process of updating kernels is
working fairly well, at least as it relates to this particular
situation. I think that any possible improvements lie in the pre-
release development and testing of kernels, with the key being your
phrase The regression went into the almost very latest kernel before
the release - I am wondering how it went into the kernel and was not
noticed during QA and testing, before the images were made etc. I'll
follow that up with the kernel team.

Re: [Bug 1169984] Re: 3.8.0-18 HDMI audio regression: Either oops or opening device fails with -ENODEV

2013-05-19 Thread Tim Richardson
Hi. I went to raring about three weeks before release trying to help
debug. So I ran into the HDMI problem pretty much right away, and I
reported the bug ... so far so good, this is why I tried a prelease. But
the point of that is to help make the release better, and that didn't
work out, except for a line in the release note.
This was a bad bug because it affected just about everyone using Ubuntu
as a media PC (where you will find HDMI displays). How did the kernel
team not realise the severity?
I guess one problem was the report was spread over countless bugs; the
duplicate detection in bug reporting didn't work, and therefore perhaps
it wasn't obvious how many people were affected.

My USB DAC is still broken with all Raring kernels so far. This was also
a bug introduced during development, I think from selective patch
applications. That's another bug report we are still working on... but
by and large, Raring was not a great release for me. I think the Ubuntu
kernel approach is fragile ... regressions and breaks get introduced
faster than they can be triaged and fixed. Raring's kernel was not
release quality in my opinion ... the release note line about broken
HDMI audio basically proves it: Ubuntu released a kernel with a known
bug, the severity of which was either not well understood, or the
affected users were considered outside the target user-base (which I
can't believe). Either way, not very impressive. Luckily we can use
generic kernels.

I'm not sure what you mean with a ton of HDMI related regressions, are
you referring to all people hit by this bug, or that there are other
HDMI bugs as well?

Anyway, this bug kind of overshadows all other HDMI bugs. So if there
are other HDMI bugs as well, I feel we still need to get this one fixed
first and out there, and then see what new HDMI bugs come in after that.
And if we then find something that hits many, I'll try to look into it
and see if I can fix it. From the testing done *before* this bug went
into the kernel, I don't think there was anything that looked like
hitting many, but I admit not having looked thoroughly enough to be sure.

Is there an ETA for kernel -22?

I just picked up -21-generic, now have this oops in dmesg but also
garbled graphics (Radeon HD 7750, fglrx-updates proprietary driver)
after the Ubuntu boot logo, leaving the desktop completely inaccessible
(thankfully ctrl-alt-F2 will fix the graphics, but it's not the kind of
thing most users are going to know about, I'm not even sure why it fixes
the graphics problem).

Anyway, not a successful update, in fact almost terminal (pardon the

again in the sound settings panel and works fine when selected. if
there's not a good behind the scenes way to get HDMI to reset itself after
sleep, perhaps a check for HDMI devices button is in order on the sound
panel?

@ZillaVilla: that sounds like a different issue, especially if upgrading
the driver doesn't fix it:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/UpgradingAlsa/DKMS

Note that one of these two commands should help you get audio back without
restarting the whole system:

[Bug 1169984] Re: 3.8.0-18 HDMI audio regression: Either oops or opening device fails with -ENODEV

2013-05-11 Thread Sergey Mitrichev
UPDATE:

HDMI sound was working fine on Ringtail with 3.9. After this bug was
fixed in In order to be in mainstream, I returned back to 3.8 with
3.8.20.36 generic (from main Canonical repo). And HDMI card disappeared
again from PulseAudio sound manager! Returned to 3.9 - no success, it is
lost now... Checked, no dkms used.

So, as a result of a fixed kernel release 3.8.20 - problem returned
again, kernel upgrade not working anymore... No HDMI sound.

This bug is awaiting verification that the kernel in -proposed solves
the problem. Please test the kernel and update this bug with the
results. If the problem is solved, change the tag 'verification-needed'
to 'verification-done'.

If verification is not done by one week from today, this fix will be
dropped from the source code, and this bug will be closed.

See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how
to enable and use -proposed. Thank you!

sudo apt-get update

or you could just follow the instructions at the top of (before the
Selective upgrading from -proposed heading)
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed and then run Update

all of the other -proposed packages if you don't want to.

2013-05-07 Thread GonzO
bwat47 is correct.

What's worse, is that this defect is FAR worse than this bug makes it
out to be. This isn't JUST a problem where people's sound cards don't
work; on systems where the nVidia binary driver is installed, this
defect makes Ubuntu *unusable*: Unity fails to load due to the chain of
events at play (broken HDMI driver - unable to load nVidia video driver
- unable to load Nouveau, which is blacklisted by the installation of
the nVidia binary driver - unable to load Vesa, because it relies on
the framebuffer driver, which is *also* blacklisted by Ubuntu's nVidia
packages).

But none of that gets mentioned when they mark the higher-intensity
defect reports as duplicates of this one.

currently available in Raring-proposed.

Please test and if it fixes the issue for you please remove the
verification-needed tag from this bug and add a verification-done tag.
If the proposed kernel does not fix the issue please remove the

2013-05-05 Thread Mirto Silvio Busico
Hi all,
I'm commenting here because this bug is marked as duplicate of Bug #1173843

In my case the system was not able to halt nor was able to suspend (see
Bug #1173843). Then the problem disappeased.

But with the last update that installed kernel the problem is here
again: I cannot shutdown and power off the machine.

Uname says:
Linux msb03 3.8.0-19-generic #30-Ubuntu SMP Wed May 1 16:35:23 UTC 2013 x86_64
x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Anyone is experiencing this behaviour?

  === Current recommended workaround ===

Hopefully there'll soon be a proposed kernel to test instead, but if you
can't wait, simplest is to:
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/UpgradingAlsa/DKMS

+ === Alternate workaround ===
+ IF you have no intention to use the HDMI audio, blacklisting the HDMI audio
module will probably prevent this issue. The following commands should do it:
+ echo blacklist snd-hda-codec-hdmi | sudo tee -a
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklisthmdi.conf
+ sudo depmod -a

2013-05-05 Thread bwat47
@Mirto

I think the bug effects you the same way it did me, In my case this
problem happened at random. sometimes it would boot problem free,
other times it would boot with pulseaudio dummy output and it would
totally hang on reboot/shutdown/halt, and other times I would simply get
a kernel panic during boot. With the kernel from here:
http://people.canonical.com/~apw/lp1169984-raring/ I have seen none of
these issues.

[Bug 1169984] Re: 3.8.0-18 HDMI audio regression: Either oops or opening device fails with -ENODEV

2013-05-03 Thread GonzO
I SPOKE TOO SOON.

3.8.0-19.30 stopped working after a reboot.

On one of my other computers, it boots to lightdm (after a wait), but in
the wrong resolution. The HDMI driver is still broken here, and it
takes the nVidia driver with it.

Still using 3.9 mainline, which really works great. I wish Raring would
just move to that and give up the 3.8 kernel with its odd patches
altogether.

[Bug 1169984] Re: 3.8.0-18 HDMI audio regression: Either oops or opening device fails with -ENODEV

2013-05-03 Thread Cody Smith
the reason they don't go to 3.9 (this is my assumption) is that FGLRX
doesn't support it yet, and possibly not Nvidia's drivers, and very
possibly other proprietary drivers. They want Ubuntu to be usable by as
wide an audience as possible, and going to 3.9 when many drivers don't
support it is a big step backwards in that area. remember: Ubuntu isn't
just about you, but EVERYBODY who uses it and works on it.

2013-05-03 Thread Cody Smith
@ giacof, true, true, patches are a different beast than just upgrading
the kernel, I wasn't even saying that patches should be applied.

@ Cleber, the latest upstream AMD Drivers (13.4) only JUST got support
for 3.8, nothing on 3.9 so I myself would be out a working video card
(the open-source AMD driver doesn't work with my AMD Radeon HD 6670,
kernel panic soon after boot) so I'd have to use my onboard AMD card,
with is inferior to the PCI one.

yeah, one of several reasons I'm considering picking up a new PSU and

[Bug 1169984] Re: 3.8.0-18 HDMI audio regression: Either oops or opening device fails with -ENODEV

2013-05-01 Thread 龍渊
Sound card is no longer detected in the latest upgrade, dummy output every
time when I reboot the OS now for me.
Saleh's fix in comment #16 did NOT fix my problem.
The kernel from #17 did NOT fix it for me neither.

~$ aplay -l

~$ cat /proc/asound/cards

My Temporary Solution——

~$ sudo alsa force-reload
[sudo] password for longyuan:
Terminating processes: 1298 2021
2021.
Unloading ALSA sound driver modules: snd-hda-codec-hdmi snd-hda-codec-conexant
snd-hda-intel snd-hda-codec snd-hwdep snd-pcm snd-page-alloc snd-seq-midi
snd-seq-midi-event snd-rawmidi snd-seq snd-seq-device snd-timer (failed:
modules still loaded: snd-hda-codec-hdmi snd-hda-codec-conexant snd-hda-codec
snd-hwdep snd-pcm snd-page-alloc snd-timer).
Loading ALSA sound driver modules: snd-hda-codec-hdmi snd-hda-codec-conexant
snd-hda-intel snd-hda-codec snd-hwdep snd-pcm snd-page-alloc snd-seq-midi
snd-seq-midi-event snd-rawmidi snd-seq snd-seq-device snd-timer.

Though somethings failed, then the sound setting options come back, the
mic works, after I restart the X window, I can hear the voice, but lost
again when I reboot the computer.

Testing on 13.04 with that kernel, I still see regressions as opposed to
12.04.2 kernel.

/proc/asound/card1/eld.* records are empty (only monitor_present: 1 is
indicated, 12.04 reports full ELD data)

The alsa DKMS solution did fix the occasional kernel panic and dummy

ultra totally stop working but the kernel in Andy's comment (and the

Finally it is working with no need to nstall a new Kernal, what you need
to do is simply download and install the lates version of this audio
Package: oem-audio-hda

1- Download Install this Package:
https://code.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-audio-dev/+archive/alsa-daily/+packages,
then Reboot
2- Go to Sound Settings, you should now see your hdmi device listed, select
it and your done.

Thats about it, Enjoy you day (:

I have the same problem, cannot get ATI HDMI [Cedar] to display as an option in
sound settings. I don't have audio cables or I'd test the analog card on the
computer, but I'd rather be using digital output to my amp anyhow. before
upgrading from 12.10 to 13.04 it would go missing after the display went to
sleep or the amplifier was turned off for an extended period of time.. Now
after upgrade to 13.04 I cannot get it to come back. aplay -l listed below, is
there any more information I can provide to help?
