[Bug 127948] Re: network admin doesn´t change interfaces file

2008-11-13 Thread Wiplash4
Hello
I have the same problem. I do not understand: WHy is there a general interfaces
file while each user can establish his own network? THat is not consistent.

ANd while You on it: Redesign this whole file! Here is my proposal
auto eth0/ath0/mobile/dsl static ip/dhcp
address
subnet
gateway
dns1
dns2
...
search domain1
search domain2
...

and so on

Please establish interfaces for each user. And please ensure that all networks
are written in correctly! I installed 3 networks and only one was listed in the
interfaces file.
ANd by the way: The MAC-Id is fixed for each device. Why is there drop-down
list instead of a simple textfield in the new-network mask, which lists all
available mac-ids? I still have to look up the mac via ifconfig.

[Bug 127948] Re: network admin doesn´t change interfaces file

2008-11-13 Thread Wiplash4
Oh I forgot something: Move he whole /etc/networks into
/home/networks/profiles

then the /etc/interfaces (not /etc/networks/interfaces) should have
interfaces and their specifications (mac, etc.) only.

Ifdown and ifup should be controlled by users.

And by the way: Move network proxy into the network setting, because my network
proxy is tied to the network I am dialed in.
Move network settings from Others to Networks in the control center and
move vpn from network settings into the tsclient!

2007-10-29 Thread Thomas de Graaff
In Feisty I now have the following /etc/netwokt/interfaces, it is made
by using the networiking application in xubuntu, and this works just
fine:

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

# Ethernet network interface
iface eth0 inet dhcp

iface ath1 inet dhcp
wireless-essid *
wireless-key **
address 192.168.1.64
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.1.254

auto ath1

I have not upgraded to gutsy, not enough space on my harddisk for two
versions of xubuntu. Next month I am supposed to get SPSS, a statiscal
package for Linux, then I can finaly get rid of XP and become a beta
tester for Xubuntu.
