The problem seems to be fixed (from my test) in Intrepid by installing the following two packages: thunderbird 2.0.0.21+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.10.1 thunderbird-gnome-support 2.0.0.21+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.10.1 thunderbird-gnome-support, which was not installed with thunderbird, seems to solve the issue and show the icons. I recommend modifying the thunderbird package install script to have it detect if gnome is installed, and if yes then install thunderbird-gnome-support. I can report that the problem is still there. I use Linux Mint which is largely based on the Ubuntu repositories How does one compile a .deb package from the source code? It sounds like the solution has been identified, the appropriate fixes just waiting to be compiled, but nobody's made the package yet. I am having the same issue, Thunderbird does not show many attachment icons. Please compile with the option --enable-image- decoders=icon,png,gif,jpeg,bmp AND install the package gnome-icon-theme when making the next Debian Package for the next version, and please upload a fixed copy to the repositories.
