[Bug 138305] Re: Dell Optiplex 320 won't boot from live CD Gutsy (Tribe 5)

2009-02-19 Thread Shai Berger
I also have the wretched Optiplex 320. hpet=disable was enough to get it
to boot, but not enough to make it play sounds. When I also add noacpi
pci=noacpi all_generic_ide I do get sound. I'm not sure what these do
-- I suspect the first two are synonymous and the third does nothing of
value -- but this is where I got by following forums and some
experimentation on my own; it Works For Me(tm).

Thought you'd like to know.

2009-01-08 Thread ray.voelker
I have a Optiplex 320 as well ... i can confirm that the boot param

hpet=disable

is needed for that as well to get the system to boot the 8.10 live cd.
What does that do exactly? And what is the problem with this system
configuration?

[Bug 138305] Re: Dell Optiplex 320 won't boot from live CD Gutsy (Tribe 5)

2008-08-28 Thread Leann Ogasawara
The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the
upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would
appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel.
There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-
image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and
test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer
2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4.
Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced.
You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the
bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please
open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the
2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please
specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26
kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

I've downloaded the Alpha 4 now. I still need the hpet=disable switch

When I leave that option out, the screen blanks upon boot, I see a

2008-08-13 Thread Leann Ogasawara
Hi Stephan,

Thanks for the feedback. Would you be willing to test the latest
Intrepid Alpha and confirm this is an issue for the upcoming release?
The reason I ask is that Intrepid is actively being developed at the
moment so fixes will likely be made there first. If the issue still
exists, could you try booting the Intrepid kernel with the 'quiet' and
'splash' options removed and then take a digital photo of any error
messages you see when the system hangs and attach it to this report?
Thanks.

2008-08-13 Thread Stephan Fabel
Hi Leann,

I am in the process of downloading the Intrepid Alpha 3. I just wanted
to report on the status in Hardy as experienced by me. I am using Grub2
to boot, as Grub will generally fail; at least I could not get it to
work, not matter what I did.

I am currently appending hpet=disable pnpbios=off to get rid of the
error messages. I still get the following errors when booting, although
I am not sure whether this has anything to do with the issue at hand:

This is with the latest Ubuntu kernel in Hardy (2.6.24-19-generic). I
will let you know once I've tried the Intrepid Alpha. Unfortunately, I
won't be able to install it as the machine is needed as a workstation.

Thanks,
Stephan

2008-01-10 Thread Stephan Fabel
Using the boot option 'acpi=off' helped me boot the latest gutsy kernel
(2.6.22-14-generic). However the kernel also complains about the PnP
BIOS and suggests adding 'pnpbios=off', which makes the message
disappear. 'hpet=disable' doesn't have any effect on my computer.

Just an update, the allocation error is still occurring in the official
release of Gutsy. I am using the standard desktop-i386 live CD. As with
tribe 5, I select the run or install option from the opening menu, see

suggested I restart and take out the splash quiet option, the last
message I receive before everything halts is PCI: MSI quirk detected.

Not sure how useful the previous information will be, since they are not
from the kernel that is having problems booting. I'm attaching the last
messages displayed before my machine hangs on bootup to this file, which
will hopefully be more useful. Unfortunately, only a portion of the
messages relating to that PCI device are shown. I think there are more
before that, but it's hard to get a bead on them as they're flashing by.
NOOB question: is there a way to go through those messages more slowly?

2007-10-15 Thread Jeffrey McCloskey
Just to let you know, I tried the Gutsy RC Desktop installation on my
computer, and ran into the same problem. I get the initial menu, pick
the Install/Run option, see the Kernel progress bar, and then receive
the same message listed above. Obviously, since I can't load the O/S,
there's no way I can run any of your required tests under it.

My computer has an ASUS M2A-VM motherboard, with an integrated AMD 690G
and ATI SB600 chipset. It appears it's the SB600 chipset that Gutsy is
having problems with. Oh, I also have noted that when Gutsy freezes and
I have to power down and restart, since r-s-e-i-u-b won't work, I get a
POST failure on reboot. I'm not sure if the two are related, but I
normally don't get that error message when the computer starts up, only
after an aborted load of Gutsy.

If there's any additional tests you'd like me to run to try and figure
out what's happening, let me know.
