OK, I finaly had the chance to test wich addon causes the freeze. After adding all addons one by one and restarting, then testing by opening a third window. The culprit is Google Toolbar version 3.0.20070525L. I've deleted my profile and installed only Google Toolbar just to be sure. I will test more plugins now, maybe it can be traced to a certain XUL funtion or similar. firefox -P, then creating a new profile solved the issue. I also tried deleting ~/.mozilla and running firefox as normal, which also worked a treat. this was a clean install of gutsy from tribe 4, then fairly regular dist-upgrades to keep current. I'll run through those tests in a few hours when I am able to reboot into my gutsy install. I can confirm this, according to gnomefreak on on irc its either java6 or pango related.
