This issue is still occurring in Intrepid Alpha 5 with a Thinkpad R32. In Alpha 4, Mute button will mute in hardware, pressing a volume key will unmute. Hotkey-Setup only seems to be able to see the volume up/down keys, mute key does nothing when pressed while setting up the key. Latest updates with Alpha 5 do not see the buttons at all. They will not detect any presses of the ThinkPad button, Volume up/down/mute, or LCD brightness up/down. On Gutsy the tpd package cannot be installed due to the fact that it conflicts with hotkey-setup which in turn is required by ubuntu- desktop. I don't doubt tpb works since, if I remember correctly, that was the package that enabled the buttons on past versions of ubuntu. i think you are right, after the post i tried out the sound while the key indictors were working on my r31 for the volume they had no affect on changing the volume. I have an R30 and I get mostly the same behavior. After upgrading to Gutsy (on release day) the volume keys no longer do anything by themselves. The mute button works and then I can unmute by pressing a volume key, but this seems to be happening without the knowledge of the OS. Likewise the LCD brightness buttons work but the OS doesn't seem to know the action is occurring. Previously on Feisty, changing volume would pop-up this volume widget in the center of the screen showing the volume change (also the volume applet would show the changes). Same occurred for the LCD brightness. yes, i have the same behaviour of the mute button - it works and i can unmute with one of the volume buttons. On Feisty there was also a widget in the center. i am having the same issue since updating to gusty on my r31 thinkpad, also with the brightness keys the center widget does not show up anymore, but it works.
