[Bug 1552504] Re: clicking noise on acer 131t-c1yf

2016-05-14 Thread bhikkhu subhuti
Switched to Mate 16.04 since the clicking noise is present in Lubuntu after
installing pulseaudio for Skype to run.
The Noise is only in the left speaker.
Mute fixes it but not acceptable as a fix.
Changing the balance to the right speaker DOES NOT FIX THIS (strange).
Disabling the microphone does not fix this either.

[Bug 1552504] Re: clicking noise on acer 131t-c1yf

2016-05-04 Thread bhikkhu subhuti
** Description changed:

  My machine is solid state.
I updated the intel graphics driver
I update a few days ago via ubuntu udpater

- There is a subtle clicking noise coming near from the usb port. The machine
is solid state and the ubuntu is running from the sd card The noise happnes
with usb live boot too.
+ There is a subtle clicking noise coming from the left speaker.
+
The mint 17 usb makes the noise too and then warns me that that the graphics
gpu will not be used and then the clicking stops.
-
- Lubuntu installed on top of ubuntu still makes the noise.
- Lubuntu live usb does NOT make the noise.
+ ubuntu makes the noise.
+ Lubuntu 16.04 does not make the noise, until I installed pulseaudio.
+ before that, it would make the noise if I installed and ran, metacity and or
audacity.
+
Windows 10 does not make the noise.

- I suspect compiz, but ultimately I think it is a kernal problem.
+
+ I saw some comments on askubuntu.com
+ I think it is a conflict with the nouveau driver not loading properly. This
is why the soundcard and graphics affect the problem
+ Usually, this bug is caused by alsa automute (removed) and power-save for the
sound card. I was unable to set the settings so that the file changes would
"stick" the kernel keeps overwriting the files even if I mark them as nobody
can change.
+
+ I posted the links in the comments
+
+
I suspect this is a CherryView Bug.

This bug has been reported on ubuntu forums and ask ubuntu and no responses.
- I will be switching to Lubuntu in a few days unless I hear back from you. I
am technical and willing to help.
+ This bug still exists for Lubuntu 16.04 with the latest kernel 4.6-rc6
+ The bios has be downgraded to 1.09 from 1.12 since it did not fix the problem.

[Bug 1552504] Re: clicking noise on acer 131t-c1yf

2016-05-02 Thread bhikkhu subhuti
I am unable to disable the power save to see if this is a problem,
however, supposedly, this powersave will not be activated when the
laptop is plugged in. I loaded the system with this plugged in and ran
audacity (which causes clicking). This did no solve the problem. So I
think it could be a problem with the nouveau driver not loading and a
conflict with the graphics.

I also removed the proprietary drivers, but that did not work.

[Bug 1552504] Re: clicking noise on acer 131t-c1yf

2016-05-01 Thread bhikkhu subhuti
I think I know more about the cause of the problem. It is the speaker and
conflict with the graphics.
I did some more research on this issue and even though I ignored the askubuntu
entries on speaker noise, I read it more carefully. It is actually speaker
noise that is causing the problem. It is the left speaker which is near the
usb port. I had to lift up the laptop and hold my ear next to the speaker to
verify it was the speaker and not something else. It is the speaker.

There were some entries on ask ubuntu and
http://askubuntu.com/questions/160882/popping-noise-from-laptop-speakers/217334#217334
I tried the stuff here, but the power save stuff did not work in solving the
problem.

the last entry mentioned some type of hunch about a driver not being loaded
and how to verify this
http://askubuntu.com/questions/550083/weird-noise-from-left-headphone

I do not have the nouveau loaded when I do a lsmod as suggested.
This is related to the Nvidia card and a conflict.
So I have another card.. intel and this driver is conflicting it.
This was said to be fixed, but popped up again from one of the linux guys. I
think it is the same problem but for a different driver.
I can verify this is speaker noise also by opening wine (and speficially a
program called balabolka) and then the clicking starts. If I mute the speaker,
then I can remove the noise. This is not a good fix, but it works.

In any case, this must be the problem because it is related to the graphics and
the speaker conflict. It must be it.
I can manually load the Noveau with modprobe but I do not know how to check the
kernel for errors.
I do not know how to do the commands they say.

Here it is the text below:
Your DDX does not work with your current kernel and/or libdrm. There are at
least three possible reasons for this: the nouveau DRM kernel module is not
loaded, a version mismatch between the Nouveau DRM and libdrm, or KMS being
disabled.

First check, that lsmod command lists nouveau. If not, do modprobe
nouveau to load the nouveau DRM kernel module, and check the kernel log
for possible errors.

If the kernel module nouveau is loaded according to lsmod command, but
there are no kernel messages about nouveau at all, then most likely
Nouveau KMS is disabled. This prevents the driver to work at all.
Possible places to disable KMS are:

kernel command line with: nomodeset, drm.modeset=0, nouveau.modeset=0 or
similar modprobe.conf or modprobe.d/ adding the module options drm
modeset=0 or nouveau modeset=0 initramfs carrying the above module
options Check and remove all those that you may find, and retry.

thunderbird does make noise. It might just be when I am online that it makes
noise. This might also help.
There are some skylake firmware. I wonder if this is simply included in the
latest kernels

2016-04-28 Thread bhikkhu subhuti
Thunderbird stopped making the noise and may have been just the greeter screen.
I think gtk3 is ok because firefox works ok.
Wine still makes the noise if i launch any application under wine.
I am sure (not tested for this version) that adding a compost manager like
metacity will make the noise.
Compton works without noise in Lubuntu 16.04.
I Tested Mate 16.04 and it makes noise even with removing the compost manager
in the tweaker.
Same problem with xubuntu 16.04. Noise even with removing the compost manager
on tweak.

Once the noise starts, it sill not stop until reboot. Logoff will not change
anything.
One exception. Running apk apps on chrome will make noise but will stop once
it is closed.

2016-04-28 Thread bhikkhu subhuti
I am running Lubuntu 16.04 on legacy. The new release still has problems if I
run certain programs like Wine or Thunderbird.
I think it is related to graphics and it may be related to gtk3 too. Not
totally sure. It is easy to test.. even in Lubuntu.

Because I am on legacy, I can upgrade the bios again if you wish. But
currently, this is unassigned.

Can someone tell me what this clicking noise is? Is it something
dangerous. it is a solid state computer.

I can duplicate this bug on Lubuntu. If I run Metacity, the bug shows
up (hearing-wise). I have installed windows and lubuntu as legacy, but
I am still on the previous or original bios.

The new bios did not change the clicking noise and messed up eufi
settings to be "more secure" and forget my settings to boot lubuntu as
secure. That problem went away when I downgraded back to my original
bios (not easy to do).

I am running 4.5 stable kernel.

Version 1.09 fixed my booting problems as expected.
Legacy booting of usb still does not work. It did before.
I will double check and make another stick using ubuntu 15.10
And then once again with universal installer.
I read that older casters do not work.
In any case that is a side issue. I could not boot with the NEWER "more secure
less buggy bios."

I still have an ubuntu 15.10 sd with rc7
Let me know what the sound is.
Then...
I can install another daily if you want.

[Bug 1552504] Re: clicking noise on acer 131t-c1yf

2016-03-11 Thread bhikkhu subhuti
I aborted during the file copy process.
It was hanging and i wanted to go to bed and we run on generator until 10pm.
I later did a full install on a diffenrent SD just like my lubuntu (my main
system).
That ubuntu had same problems..and the problem with the new bios seemed to be
the same.
That is...it loads fine, and then after a few reboots, it cannot find grub and
gives a minimal.
Boot repair is needed all of the time.
Sometimes if yiu play with the settings without using boot repair, grub loads
for some magical reason.
Tpm is disabled by the way.
Clearing tpm resetting factory defaults and redoing the efi file to the list
often seems work.
Most of my playing is with Lubuntu 15.10 4.4.4 kernel.
I only booted with ubuntu a few times.

This clicking noise problem happens in versions before. I said that. I had a
mint 17. That made noise until it said it was not using the gpu and warned me
it would use heavy CPU. Then the clicking stopped. That is key information
for you that it is likely the cherryview.
Lubuntu 15.10 does not make the noise.
Wiles ubuntu makes noise.

Whatever I am tesrin is 15.10

The legacy boots worked fine with all versions of ubuntu flavors I just
mentioned IN BIOS 1.09
The full install of ubuntu 15.10 with rc7 and not doing updates of other stuff
still clicks with bios 1.12
I really think this is not the bios.

The uefi problems are new for this bios which I will be downgrading, after I
get myself to register my acer with acer.
I need to be registered to get warrantee, but this bios thing might break my
warrantee. You know, I am a monk with no money because I do not touch money.
This was a gift. And it is not the most expensive computer, but it is all I
have. I am also now in Myanmar so warrantee is a little difficult too. Lastly
Internet is expensive and I need to ask my parents for refills. I have
downloaded quite a lot already with rc6 rc7 and 4.4.4 .
The Lubuntu 15.10 has the updates plus 4.4.4
The clicking ubuntu 15.10 has no updates but rc7. Bios 1.12 full install on sd
The clicking noise happened with ubuntu 15.10 with updates and 4.2 kernel full
install on SD bios Version 1.09
No clicking on 15.10 lubuntu either live usb or full install or any bios.

***It is unlikely i will be testing ubuntu until you tell me what the noise
is.
Lubuntu is much better anyway. Super fast and lean.

It worked on 1.09 bios

I do not understand why this bios is better? Nothing was fixed. Are they

bug?
***What is the clicking noise? Is it a fan? Is it a circuit?

There are some sleep issues with win 10 on this bios too.

bhikkhu subhuti, you would want to use http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-

Re: [Bug 1552504] Re: clicking noise on acer 131t-c1yf

2016-03-11 Thread bhikkhu subhuti
I cannot even boot to live lubuntu disk with legacy.
Previous 1.09 worked.
It is the firmware that you said is more secure than my old one.

I am downgrading..and the bios upgrade 1.12 with rc7 did not stop the noise
either.

*
Can you tell me what the noise is?

[Bug 1552504] Re: clicking noise on acer 131t-c1yf

2016-03-11 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
bhikkhu subhuti:
>"It does not work anymore without uefi."

If you are still using the same install that was done under UEFI
originally, then that is expected. To clarify my comment, you could
download a clean install from Microsoft (ex. Windows 7), place the BIOS
into non-UEFI, install it, and it works. However, if you then flip the
BIOS to UEFI, then it is expected that the non-UEFI installed instance
would stop working, and vice versa.

2016-03-10 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
bhikkhu subhuti:

I'm not aware of any requirement that Windows has to have UEFI on to be
used. One may install Windows with UEFI engaged, or not. It is
recommended not to use UEFI, given UEFI implementations can be spotty.

>"On the other hand, I use windows so rarely now, I could switch the

Dual booting Windows and Ubuntu has been done before UEFI was even
invented.

2016-03-10 Thread bhikkhu subhuti
I later did a reinstall of ubuntu on a newish SD card and got the same
error.
It works but wait ten mutes powered down and then it does not.
I had uefi on because I want uefi on to work with windows which is required.

On the other hand, I use windows so rarely now, I could switch the bios to
uefi manually when I need to boot windows.

Can grub run windows without uefi?

It was working fine before.
I found out how

2016-03-10 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
bhikkhu subhuti, given you aborted an install, you should do what I told
you already and reinstall (along with turn off UEFI prior to install as
implementations of it are of various degrees of quality).

2016-03-10 Thread bhikkhu subhuti
I upgraded to bios 1.12 and the uefi or something is not working now (thanks).
I need to do boot repair every time i want to load up.
I am going to try to downgrade.
This is very dangerous.

Re: [Bug 1552504] Re: clicking noise on acer 131t-c1yf

2016-03-09 Thread bhikkhu subhuti
I'd did a purge of 4.4.4 and it still gave a minimal grub after a few boots
and a boot with usb.
(That's how to reproduce it).

I will need to call tech support to figure out how to install a lower
version bios (original preferably).
Because the ubuntu install has this problem, I know a fresh install will
not fix this.
It is the bios.

However, i am doing a separate disk boot. but it should not matter.
Everything was fine until now.

Re: [Bug 1552504] Re: clicking noise on acer 131t-c1yf

2016-03-09 Thread bhikkhu subhuti
I aborted installing directky to a usb.
My main system on mmcblk1 (sd) is not loading grub on subsequent boots
after repairing .

It worked before yes.

There ubuntu does the same.

However there are two new common factors. Linux upgrade in both.
I will remove 4.4.4 from my lubuntu after I recover the boot (bott repair
ever few boots is needed)

I hope that works! (And give you work instead of acer tech support).
The problem is likely the bios. I can clear tpm delete al security, reset
factory security settings and then select the efi file and THEN I CAN boot
properly without boot repair.

I have only used 15.10. This is a new problem related to sold on this
clicking noise.
Bios or linux upgrades.

2016-03-09 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
bhikkhu subhuti, if you have aborted an install previously, you probably
should reinstall cleanly.

Despite this, did this problem not occur in a release prior to 15.10?

bhikkhu subhuti, in order to allow additional upstream developers to
examine the issue, at your earliest convenience, could you please test the
 latest upstream kernel available from
 http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D ? Please keep
 in mind the following:
 1) The one to test is at the very top line at the top of the page (not
 the daily folder).
 2) The release names are irrelevant.
 3) The folder time stamps aren't indicative of when the kernel actually
 was released upstream.
 4) Install instructions are available at
 https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds .

If testing on your main install would be inconvenient, one may:
 1) Install Ubuntu to a different partition and then test this there.
 2) Backup, or clone the primary install.

If the latest kernel did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you
couldn't boot into the OS) please make a comment in your report about this,
and continue to test the next most recent kernel version until you can test
to the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on
which kernel version specifically you tested. If this issue is fixed in the
mainline kernel, please add the following tags by clicking on the yellow
circle with a black pencil icon, next to the word Tags, located at the
 bottom of the report description:
 kernel-fixed-upstream
 kernel-fixed-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Where X, and Y are the first two numbers of the kernel version, and Z is
the release candidate number if it exists.

If the mainline kernel does not fix the issue, please add the following
 tags:
 kernel-bug-exists-upstream
 kernel-bug-exists-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Please note, an error to install the kernel does not fit the criteria of
 kernel-bug-exists-upstream.

Also, you don't need to apport-collect further unless specifically
 requested to do so.

Once testing of the latest upstream kernel is complete, please mark this
report Status Confirmed. Please let us know your results.

 Thank you for your understanding.

Installed on new sd.
NOT FIXED Yet

Just a note.
I called tech support .
They said that 1.09 bios was for some fan issue and that I could install it.
I tried but i already installed 1.12 as per your instructions and it would
not burn a lower version.
The tech support person said it ws something else, but i figured they were
the same firmware since the size was nearly tye same and the version
number.

The dangers of a new bios
My machine is no having problems. I keep getting blank minimal grubs. I
run boot repair and it works a few times, then it goes to grub minimal
again. I am not sure what it is. I have to reset my secure boot stuff
now all of the time. I hope it is something I screwed up from aborting a
usb install or the 4.4.4. If not, i will have big problems if it is the
bios.

2016-03-08 Thread bhikkhu subhuti
I cannot download anything until 4.00 am when the myanmar rates are 1 ks
versus 6ks per mb.
I am excited to something useful for the ubuntu community.
Can you tell me what the clicking noise is? I am most curious because my
comouter is solid state.!

In the meantime, I could prepare an ubuntu , but how.?
The testing for ubuntu is now done on a standard usb live 1 gb persist. On
a 9 gb parition usb.
The 4.4.4 kernel was actually only installed on lubuntu.

However, my machine came with only 32 gb. And windows eats most of it (with
almost nothing installed).
I have lubuntu installed on a removeable SD which is permanently there.
(This replaced my ubuntu)
I do have another removable sd, but i am afraid to remove the one I have.
Is it possible to up steams a live usb last time it failed and there was
not enough space. I only have 2gb ram so I cannot do a big live usb. I
tried installing Ubuntu on a usb a few noghts ago and it did not work and I
needed to run boot-repair to fix things back.

[Bug 1552504] Re: clicking noise on acer 131t-c1yf

2016-03-08 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
bhikkhu subhuti, in order to allow additional upstream developers to examine
the issue, at your earliest convenience, could you please test the latest
upstream kernel available from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D ? Please keep in mind
the following:
1) The one to test is at the very top line at the top of the page (not the
daily folder).
2) The release names are irrelevant.
3) The folder time stamps aren't indicative of when the kernel actually was
released upstream.
4) Install instructions are available at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds .

If testing on your main install would be inconvenient, one may:
1) Install Ubuntu to a different partition and then test this there.
2) Backup, or clone the primary install.

If the latest kernel did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you couldn't
boot into the OS) please make a comment in your report about this, and continue
to test the next most recent kernel version until you can test to the issue.
Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version
specifically you tested. If this issue is fixed in the mainline kernel, please
add the following tags by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil
icon, next to the word Tags, located at the bottom of the report description:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Where X, and Y are the first two numbers of the kernel version, and Z is
the release candidate number if it exists.

If the mainline kernel does not fix the issue, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Please note, an error to install the kernel does not fit the criteria of
kernel-bug-exists-upstream.

Also, you don't need to apport-collect further unless specifically
requested to do so.

Once testing of the latest upstream kernel is complete, please mark this
report Status Confirmed. Please let us know your results.

Thank you for your understanding.

2016-03-08 Thread bhikkhu subhuti
I tried the bios 1.2 on it and it still makes the noise on a usb live boot.
Please be reminded I am a monk living in a monastery on a mountain. They
turn on a diesel generator at night which has been repaired only a few
days ago.
For some reason electricity matters with bios update. It worked
thankfully!

Do I need to install the other bios ones listed?
Still Clicking.
Bhikkhu Subhuti

I am loving lubuntu. I just installed 4.4.4 stable.
Works.

Re: [Bug 1552504] Re: clicking noise on acer 131t-c1yf

2016-03-08 Thread bhikkhu subhuti
I will give it a try. Why not.?
I did read the etiquette, but ignored the bios thing because I thought it
was too dangerous.
I recommend linking to updating bios if you want someone to do this.
If one has windows, it is really easy (on paper).

I researched how to do this and it seems easy enough although dangerous.
But I have flashed my tablet many times and I know brick in is a myth. (I
am typing on a bricked tablet).

For the record, I did try to upgrade the kernel and it crashed on
install.., using apt and the standard repositories. Version 30 I think it
was. I used that opportunity to install lubuntu.

I am still interested in helping ubuntu and I tried to update a usb kernel,
but i cannot.
So I tried on my lubuntu just for fun..
Rc6 would not install properly BTW. I could recover using advanced options.

So I tried many things.

I will let you know if the bios update helps the ubuntu clicking. I can
test on a usb live ubuntu without worrying about the kernel now.

Thanks for your help on ubuntu community.
If you need to see the message apt gave on rc6 failed install I can send it.
I might file a bug, but rc7 just came out. And I will file the bug using a
4.2 kernel.

[Bug 1552504] Re: clicking noise on acer 131t-c1yf

2016-03-08 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
bhikkhu subhuti, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu
better.

As per http://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/drivers an update to your
computer's buggy, insecure, and outdated BIOS is available (1.12). If
you update to this following
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate does it change anything?

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette
.

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so
posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful.

Also, you don't have to create a new bug report.

Once the BIOS is updated, if the problem is still reproducible:
1) Please provide the output of the following terminal command (not perform an
apport-collect):
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
2) Please make a comment specifically advising on if there was an improvement
or not.
3) Please mark this report Status Confirmed.

If it's not reproducible, please mark this as Invalid.

Thank you for your understanding.

2016-03-02 Thread bhikkhu subhuti
This is a different 131t it is the c1yf model subset of tye 131t which
has 2 gb of ram and 32gb hard drive. The ubuntu is installed on the SD
(not live version).

Live ubuntu usb disks does this too.
