Hi Robie, sorry for having given you, not just a headache, but ongoing migraine as well. Do whatever you can to bin the report so nobody else gets to see it. I wiped everything and reinstalled. The positive is I now have everything running in virtual boxes eg mysql in linux on linux and always, without exception, make a snapshot before doing any update/upgrade. [Bug 1573624] Re: package mysql-server-5.7 5.7.11-0ubuntu6 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Some people commenting here appear to have bug 1592669. Please follow that bug if you had previously disabled the mysql service. Different comments from different people clearly relate to different root causes. Developers cannot make progress in understanding or fixing bugs if you mix everything together. So please, unless you are absolutely sure that you have *exactly the same issue* (root cause, not just some symptoms) as the original reporter (Bill), file a separate full report and don't pile on this one. If you don't understand why I'm making this comment, please read "How to Report Bugs Effectively" (https://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html) first. Thanks! Bill: I'm sorry I can't help further. Please see the essay I linked above. If we cannot reproduce your issue, or figure out how to reproduce your issue, I'm afraid we cannot tell whether your problem was a bug, or if it was something you did to your system that is not expected to work. If you can't tell us exactly what you did such that we can reproduce it either, I'm afraid your report can make no progress, and so I'll set the bug back to Incomplete to make it absolutely clear that nobody should be waiting on progress here, because none is expected. ** Changed in: mysql-5.7 (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1573624 Title: package mysql-server-5.7 5.7.11-0ubuntu6 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mysql-5.7/+bug/1573624/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1573624] Re: package mysql-server-5.7 5.7.11-0ubuntu6 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Ubuntu 16.10 -> 17.04 upgrade fails because of this, presumably if "systemctl disable mysql" was used earlier. Is that an unsupported configuration? I enabled/started mysql when the first modal error message dialog was displayed and it eventually re-tried the mysql upgrade (which succeeded with a message like "Mysql data format already up-to-date"). However, the Ubuntu upgrader GUI just quit after the main upgrade process was finished instead of cleaning up and restarting the system. I did some manual clean-up and everything appears to be fine. ** Changed in: mysql-5.7 (Ubuntu) Status: Expired => Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1573624 Title: package mysql-server-5.7 5.7.11-0ubuntu6 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mysql-5.7/+bug/1573624/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I also found that after purging and reinstalling mysql-server, it still didn't work. On clean install, mysqld looks for /etc/mysql/conf.d. If that dir isn't there, it exits. I simply had to "sudo mkdir /etc/mysql/conf.d" yesterday, and "sudo aptitude upgrade" after that, and mysql starts installing ok again. [Bug 1573624] Re: package mysql-server-5.7 5.7.11-0ubuntu6 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
@Robie Thanks for your note. #1. My system has been working perfectly for the last year or so and I've installed all updates as they appeared and without incurring any problems. So to my mind, the configuration on my end is correct. On Friday, the update dialog offered v16 so i clicked ok and let the updater do it's own stuff. When it had finished, mysql refused to run so the updater broke something. Unfortunately, breaking something like mysql server can lead to a lot of weeping and gnashing of teeth because you can't access the database to do a dump and import it to another machine. Now you have to copy the correct database files to another machine with the same version of mysql and ensure you don't loose any data on the way. So all well and good, I knew what to do but I think this could be quite traumatic for somebody with an important database and little experience. #2. I have tried all of the suggested remedies for restarting mysql but without success. I could keep trying but at this stage the easiest solution is to simply wipe mysql and start with a clean installation or I might just leave it running in the virtual machine. #3. So it makes no difference to me if you want to call it a "local configuration problem" but I disagree on principle because as I pointed out in #1, the "local configuration" wasn't a problem until v16 made it one. And as for a more detailed bug report, what more can I offer over and above what I've already given? Anyway, the world is still turning, Ubuntu is great but the support is even better. Enjoy your weekend (the little that remains of it!) Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Since it seems likely to me that this is a local configuration problem, rather than a bug in Ubuntu, I'm marking this bug as Incomplete. If indeed this is a local configuration problem, you can find pointers to get help for this sort of problem here: http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community Or if you believe that this is really a bug, then you may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem, explain why you believe this is a bug in Ubuntu rather than a problem specific to your system, and then change the bug status back to New. ** Changed in: mysql-5.7 (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1573624 Title: package mysql-server-5.7 5.7.11-0ubuntu6 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mysql-5.7/+bug/1573624/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
