[Bug 1593621] Re: Kernel panic after migration between XenServer 6.5 hosts

2016-07-19 Thread Joseph Salisbury
The 3.19(lts-vivid) kernel is now EOL, so marking that as wont fix.
However, the Trusty 3.13 kernel is still supported. I just wanted to
confirm you are not seeing this bug on Trusty using the 3.13 kernel?

[Bug 1593621] Re: Kernel panic after migration between XenServer 6.5 hosts

2016-07-01 Thread Joseph Salisbury
The commit indicated by your bisect was introduced into mainline as of 4.6-rc3
as:
ff1e22e xen/events: Mask a moving irq

It made its way into the 3.19 and 4.4 stable kernels because it was cc'd
to stable. However, it looks like the regression was already fixed in
4.4.14 per your testing results in comment 18.

This bug should be fixed in the Ubuntu stable kernels shortly, via the
normal stable update process. I'll take a look at the git logs for
4.4.14 and see if the commit that fixes this bug is obvious.

xen/events: Mask a moving irq

BugLink: http://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1571034

commit ff1e22e7a638a0782f54f81a6c9cb139aca2da35 upstream.

Moving an unmasked irq may result in irq handler being invoked on both
source and target CPUs.

With 2-level this can happen as follows:

On source CPU:
evtchn_2l_handle_events() ->
generic_handle_irq() ->
handle_edge_irq() ->
   eoi_pirq():
   irq_move_irq(data);

   /* WE ARE HERE */

   if (VALID_EVTCHN(evtchn))
   clear_evtchn(evtchn);

If at this moment target processor is handling an unrelated event in
evtchn_2l_handle_events()'s loop it may pick up our event since target's
cpu_evtchn_mask claims that this event belongs to it *and* the event is
unmasked and still pending. At the same time, source CPU will continue
executing its own handle_edge_irq().

With FIFO interrupt the scenario is similar: irq_move_irq() may result
in a EVTCHNOP_unmask hypercall which, in turn, may make the event
pending on the target CPU.

We can avoid this situation by moving and clearing the event while
keeping event masked.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream stable kernel?
Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the
latest v4.4 stable kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag:
'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot,
please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.

[Bug 1593621] Re: Kernel panic after migration between XenServer 6.5 hosts

2016-06-22 Thread Bogdan
Hello all,

I have probably same issue (freeze on Xenserver 6.5 with timekeeper.c in
backtrace) when unsuspending 14.04 VMs with 3.19 kernels.

To determine latest stable kernel version I've tested following versions
of kernel package:

linux-image-3.19.0-56-generic - Unsuspend works, XenMotion - not tested
linux-image-3.19.0-58-generic - Unsuspend works, XenMotion - works
linux-image-3.19.0-59-generic - Unsuspend causes kernel panic with
timekeeper.c, Xenmotion - kernel panic
linux-image-3.19.0-61-generic - Unsuspend causes kernel panic with
timekeeper.c, Xenmotion - kernel panic

We have some Ubuntu systems in production with 3.19.0-61 and can't
maintain our hypervisors well because it is not possible neither move
Ubuntu VM out of server nor suspend for maintenance time.

Tested on two pairs of Xenserver systems:

pair#1 - updates up to XS65ESP1023
pair#2 - updates up to XS65ESP1026 and XS65ESP1028

Please, let me know if I can give more information of test some fix.

[Bug 1593621] Re: Kernel panic after migration between XenServer 6.5 hosts

2016-06-17 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1593621/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]
