[Bug 1641120] Re: too many kernels produce start loop

2016-11-23 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
You filed a *desktop documentation* bug. Such bugs are reviewed by
volunteers who work with documentation. Your problem has nothing to do
with the desktop guide, right? So this is apparently not the right place
to complain.

If you want help to figure out how it's supposed to work, please seek
support. I posted a link to one of the possibilities you have.

If you want to raise a discussion on how Ubuntu deals with kernel
updates, then I'd recommend that you post a message to the ubuntu-devel-
discuss mailing list.

Thanks.

Re: [Bug 1641120] Re: too many kernels produce start loop

2016-11-23 Thread Jan Willem Nienhuys
Hello,

I don't find that very satisfying.
When a user such as I meets a start loop, he doesn't know
at all what is the cause. As the computer won't start, there is
no way to find out (on internet) what's the matter.

Doug Smythies writes "It has been beat to death over years and years."
which I interpret to mean that the problem is very well known to insiders
who apparently don't give a damn about users who don't know
what kernels are, nor that old kernels are preserved rather than deleted.

2016-11-23 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
I'd say that help with how to remove redundant kernels is a support
request, so @Jan: Please ask for help at e.g. .

Closing.

[Bug 1641120] Re: too many kernels produce start loop

2016-11-23 Thread Doug Smythies
I don't think this age old too many kernels problem, and the should old ones be
auto-deleted or not, is specific to any particular package. It has been beat to
death over years and years.
I'll just set this one to invalid.

** Changed in: ubuntu-docs (Ubuntu)
   Status: New => Invalid

[Bug 1641120] Re: too many kernels produce start loop

2016-11-23 Thread Chris Perry
Hi Jan, thanks for reporting this bug. It's not a documentation bug
(package=ubuntu-docs). I'll check which package it should be assigned
to.

@Gunnar. Do you know which package it should be assigned to? It's a
problem during startup, so perhaps grub-common?
