[Bug 1725384] Re: On touch screens, the apps icon in the dock does not open when touched

2018-10-15 Thread arm-c
Hello,

For what it is worth. I am affected by the same bug. It is frustrating.
I agree with all of the information presented above regarding the bug
and I have SOMETHING NEW TO ADD.

NEW: Not seen referenced anywhere is that a similar feature in
"Workspaces to Dock" add on works exactly as expected when you enable
the "favorites" feature. Touching (finger) ONCE on show installed
applications reveals the installed applications. This information may
be useful for those that are trouble shooting.

Confirmed The Following on my HP Spectre x360 Convertible 15-bl1XX.
>> Gnome Dash acts as expected without Dash to Dock, Dash to Bar, or Ubuntu
>> Dock installed / active. (Clicking on show apps shows app with one click).
>> I suspect that all share similar code to initiate show apps.
>> Initiating with long press then sliding finger off of show applications
>> after expanded will leave drawer open.
>> Looks like sliding finger in from side of screen will show applications
>> (default Gnome actions)... BUT it would be nice if swiping in again from
>> side will return to pre-swipe conditions. As it stands now, you must press
>> Escape Key, clicking show applications icon again and subsequently an open
>> application, or clicking "Activities" in top left.
>> staring an application that permits multiple instances (ie terminal / files)
>> will start two instances if started from click.

Presently, I am going to switch back to default gnome dash because of
the touch issues... and use "pinch" to show open windows and swipe in to
show applications. Hope they fix this sooner than later as I do like
the "Dash to Dock/Bar" extensions.

[Bug 1725384] Re: On touch screens, the apps icon in the dock does not open when touched

2018-10-10 Thread Maciej Lech
I am affected by the same bug. Some extra information:
 - tapping definitely does something, as brief animation can be seen (icons
flying away and back from button)
 - Sometimes tapping on icons switches on drag and drop mode (and stays like
that), even though tap itself was short
 - I have tried cinnamon desktop (mint), and there was similar problem.
Although mint menu would show, it was completely unresponsive. Unlike using
mouse or touchpad.

The fact that the Dash is visible on the desktop ~immediately after~ a
touch event seems to be contributing to the problem.

See this experiment I did...

[Bug 1725384] Re: On touch screens, the apps icon in the dock does not open when touched

2018-09-19 Thread PJSingh5000
Reading through the bug report linked by Daniel van Vugt (vanvugt) in
comment #24 (https://github.com/micheleg/dash-to-dock/issues/128), I
noticed that Dash-to-Dock is only affected.

I had uninstalled the Ubuntu Dock...
$ sudo apt autoremove --purge gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock

However, I was using the Dash-to-Dock extension, instead.
$ sudo apt install gnome-shell-extension-dashtodock

So, I disabled Dash-to-Dock.
Now the problem is gone.

Are all of you using either Dash-to-Dock or the Ubuntu-Dock?
If so, what happens when you disable or remove it?

[Bug 1725384] Re: On touch screens, the apps icon in the dock does not open when touched

2018-09-19 Thread PJSingh5000
This bug seems to only affect Xorg. Wayland is not affected (see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-
dock/+bug/1725384/comments/18).

Since Xorg is not a priority, I suspect this bug is not getting attention.
Unfortunately, many of us have to use Xorg (if you have Nvidia hardware, for
example).

Initially, I thought that perhaps Gnome is generating multiple touch
events, causing the apps overview to open, and then close again (see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-
dock/+bug/1725384/comments/10).

However, this could be an issue in Gnome Shell, Gnome Dash, Xorg,
specific hardware, or something else entirely.

Let's see if we can narrow it down or find some kind of pattern, or
clue, to what is going wrong.

Doing this may help provide the developers with enough information to
spot the cause and fix this bug.

It would really useful for all of us to list the hard ware we have...

Please share the output of:

(1)
$ sudo dmidecode | grep -A9 "System Information"

(2)
$ sudo lshw -short

(3)
$ lspci

(4) Is the multi-touch module loaded (most likely for all of us)...
$ lsmod | grep multi

(5) Multi-touch module version number...
$ modinfo hid_multitouch | grep version

[Bug 1725384] Re: On touch screens, the apps icon in the dock does not open when touched

2018-09-18 Thread Peter Bittner
Well, Johann, while there is _some_ truth in the words you say (and
seemingly, you loved Unity as much as I did---did you also notice the
massive memory footprint increase with 17.10, by the way?), I must say
it needs some time to understand that yours is not SPAM or a troll's
message, and we have to open our eyes to see some facts that prove the
opposite of what you say. Partially, at least.

- The Ubuntu website was recently overhauled, with an obvious attempt to
making "the sexiness of the Ubuntu desktop" appeal to users and vendors
alike. With an undeniable focus on sporting Snap packages (hence, the
IoT efforts have _at least_ a collateral effect on the Canonical's
desktop efforts -- I don't think this is a coincidence).
https://www.ubuntu.com/desktop

- Canonical has managed to have a tremendous success with bundling
Ubuntu with vendor hardware, specifically with DELL. The DELL website,
though there is room for improvement, offers lots and lots of models
that come shipped with Ubuntu, some even _only_ with Ubuntu (no Windows
available on them---typically, because Windows wouldn't run on that low-
end hardware. :-} The price they pay is that, for what I've seen, DELL
starts to offer (or had offered) some models also with RedHat Enterprise
as an alternative desktop system. (That hurts bad! All the endless
efforts, and then a somewhat competitor comes along and gets everything
for free.) And, the DELL website is seriously broken. _They_ need to be
kicked in their arses! https://dell.com/ubuntu :-{ ("marketing campaigns
last for too short" *facepalm*) https://pilot.search.dell.com/ubuntu
(the friggin' search is sooo brken!)

- And, yes, everybody seems to know that the GNOME code base is a total
mess. But hey, Purism will fix it! *LOL* Seriously, the Purism phone
efforts will give the GNU/Linux desktop maybe the final push that will
lead to also Ubuntu increase market share on the desktop! (I love the
future I see coming! ... even though some aspects of what Canonical
needs to do are disturbing, e.g. favor vendors of non-free OSS services
with their Snap apps in their marketing--because consumer market wants
commercial support more badly than free software!)

TL;DR

The bug, in the GNOME extensions code base and predating(!) the release of
17.10 *facepalm*, must be fixed by "the community".
https://github.com/micheleg/dash-to-dock/issues/128 (reported 2014! *LOL*)
Not sure who was so blind to pick that pile of poop to include it with 17.10
w/o at least skimming over the 215 (!) open issues... :-O

Jump in and help to fix it! Canonical is busy with IoT and updating
websites! ;-)

[Bug 1725384] Re: On touch screens, the apps icon in the dock does not open when touched

2018-09-18 Thread Johann Popper
Jeebus tap-dancing cripes, this bug breaks the cripesing apps button for
cripes sake! It's a complete dealbreaker for the entire OS, as in you
can't open applications on touchscreens! At all! Stop jerking users
around. If you're not serious about desktop anymore (which is cool, we
totally understand) just drop out of the desktop business altogether and
stop pretending. Focus on servers and IoT and point desktop users to
Mint. Jeebus!

This bug's level of absurdity defies criticism. I can't even be mad, so
much as outraged to the point of non-stop laughter for hours. GNOME
might as well have shipped nothing, then goes on playing dumb just to
gaslight troll the FOSS community. I can't believe canonical and Ubuntu
are willing to put their name on this steaming pile of Robotcop toxic
waste. Sweet cripes on a pogo stick, OH the humanity! WOWLOL!

Let's get real here: GNOME shipped a touchscreen UI where you can't
touchclick the APPS BUTTON. Knock, knock, anybody home!?!? Are there no
tablets on the Isle of Man? 18.04 "LTS"!!! Well, it had better be LTS if
we're all stuck on this slowmotion unnecessary crazy train to nowhere!
You fellas should've just slapped Unity on there for another 5 year
marathon. I'd have run with you; we all would've. Great Q almighty, I
feel like a Hitler video

2018-08-21 Thread Peter Bittner
Is this bug being worked on by Canonical? The upstream project's bug
report is more than 3 years old, how can that be explained? (Wasn't this
component only included with 17.10?)

This bug breaks a critical part of the desktop interaction, rendering
2-in-1 devices not ready for mainstream consumption. Can this issue be
escalated?

The `gnome-shell --replace' workaround seems to fix this bug for me.
However, this causes a new bug when I lock the laptop. After locking I
cannot enter my password and it is as if someone is holding down the

I am using a Dell Inspiron 17 and Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS. The Gnome version

Cubic PPA: I just tried switching between Frequent and All applications
view, and it's working OK for me.

The only change I've made that I can imagine affecting this is my use of
onboard and gnome-shell-extension-onboard, but I think it's unlikely
that that has made a difference.

When I first installed 18.04, I did get into a mode where most touch-screen
events were being ignored, but that hasn't happened for a week now. A more
detailed account of my experiences is here:

This bug affects me, running Ubuntu 18.04 on a Dell Venue 11 pro 7140.

I have a work-around that seems to be working reliably for the "Show
Applications" dots grid button: tap-and-hold until the application icons
appear, then slide your finger up into the dock bar, then release.

This only works for that one button; it does not solve the "Tapping on
an icon in the dock launches two instances of the application" problem.

If restart gnome-shell using the following in a terminal...

...then the dock behaves normally, launching one instance of an

I do see some errors after I do this, but they may be unrelated, since
it works fine after issuing the above command.

(However the error "ubuntu-dock [...] unreachable code after return

[Bug 1725384] Re: On touch screens, the apps icon in the dock does not open when touched

2017-11-22 Thread Linus Seelinger
Now it gets weird. I installed gnome-session and it seems that here,
both Caribou seems less intrusive and the "multiple touch events" issue
does not occur even when activating the Ubuntu Dock extension.

2017-11-22 Thread Linus Seelinger
I observe the same on a Dell Venue 7140. At least disabling Caribou
using the Block Caribou extension does not solve the issue.

I would like to point out the severity of this issue, as this makes the
dock virtually unusable for touchscreens and even can lock up the
activities button at the top left.

[Bug 1725384] Re: On touch screens, the apps icon in the dock does not open when touched

2017-11-09 Thread PJSingh5000
It multiple events happen immediately.

HOWEVER...

I did the same test today, and I get different results...
- Sometimes, a single touch on the Dock only does generate a single TouchUpdate
event.
- Sometimes, a single touch elsewhere on the Screen generates more than one
TouchUpdate event.

You do have to be very precise with your touch actions to ensure only
one TouchUpdate is produced. In general use, multiple TouchUpdate events
are generated when you use your finger. I guess this is normal, and the
application really just needs to look for a single TouchEnd event.

Both the screen and the Dock do generate a single TouchEnd event, and
this is probably the important event that applications need to look out
for.

Nevertheless, in the cases were I was able to cause a single TouchUpdate event
on the Dock, I still got the same behavior:
- Touching the Applications Grid Button failed to display the applications
overview.
- I momentarily saw the applications overview expand from the button, and then
retract back into the button, as if I had tapped the Applications Grid Button
twice, really fast.
- Touching an icon on the Dock (favorites) caused two instances of the
application to be launched, as if I had tapped the application icon twice,
really fast.

Does the issue have something to do with the way the Dock handles the TouchEnd
events?

Caribou (onscreen keyboard) always pops up whenever you touch the
screen; could this be influencing the behavior?

Interesting that there are that many events. Can you tell how quickly
they occur? Perhaps this can be fixed with a timeout.

[Bug 1725384] Re: On touch screens, the apps icon in the dock does not open when touched

2017-11-08 Thread PJSingh5000
Using xinput, I captured touch events on the dock's Applications Grid
Button. For comparison, I captured touch events on another portion of
the screen, away from the dock.

The results are very interesting...

When I click on the Applications Grid Button on the dock, five (!!)
Touch events are registered. These five events are enclosed by only one
Touch Begin event and one corresponding Touch End event.

However, when I click on another portion of the screen, only one Touch
events is registered, enclosed by one Touch Begin event and one
corresponding Touch End event. This is how the dock should behave.

Please see the attached files.
I've inserted comments in the output to make it easy to count the events:

[Bug 1725384] Re: On touch screens, the apps icon in the dock does not open when touched

2017-11-06 Thread PJSingh5000
Are the following bugs related to this one?
Perhaps these bugs are different manifestations of the same underlying
problem?..

If the dock receives two events, or responds twice to each event, then
the Applications "dash" would seem to not appear when you touch the
applications grid icon/button, because the applications dash would be
quickly shown and unshown.

Here are examples of this "double" response , which seems to be limited
to touch-screen interfaces:

Bug #1730281
"Application icons appear and suddenly disappear when Applications Button is
activated via a touchscreen"

Bug #1705689
"When adding an app to favourites, two icons are created"

Bug # ???
I also noted that touching on an application in the dock opens two instances of
the application.
I haven't seen if a bug report has been filed for this issue yet, but it would
be additional evidence for my theory.
