[Bug 179885] Re: Capital of Ecuador needs to be added to the Time Zone settings

2009-02-16 Thread Ruben Romero
Yes, América/Guayaquil is the right timezone for Quito and should be
more than enough.

I remember seeing Guayaquil and not Quito when installing GNU/Linux and
having the feeling that Quito should be there, but I have to agree with
Martin's comment regarding the size of a city and how known it is in the
outside world.

Guayaquil is by far the biggest city in the country, and although I love
Quito and would like to see it in the map, I think we should keep a
global view in this issue and just leave things as they are.

Quito is the capital. Guayaquil is the biggest city, Galapagos need no
introduction. One nation, 2 timezones, no need to have a third point of
reference.

I'd like to see this bug closed or changed into a KDE bug?

Hello Jason,
I apologize for not having provided Martin Pittś requested information on a
timely fashion. Unfortunately, I haven´t been able to find the information even
though I followed Martin´s instructions, again I´m using Kubuntu Hardy with KDE
4.1.2.

In final Ubuntu 8.04, you can select South America - Ecuqador - Quito
in the clock applet, which assigns it to time zone Amerika/Guayaquil. Is
that the correct time zone for Quito?

[Bug 179885] Re: Capital of Ecuador needs to be added to the Time Zone settings

2008-01-24 Thread al4jen
I already replied to Martin Pitt via e-mail, but I don't see it posted
yet; therefore, I'd like to comment in reference to what Martin posted
here. Quito along with the Galapagos Islands are the most representative
sites of Ecuador, and Quito in addition to being the political capital,
it is also the economic capital of Ecuador. This alone should be enough
to have Quito listed in the tzdata db, but to give you a good reason
that relates to time zones, see what Wikipedia says in reference to
Quito: Because of its location at the equator, Quito does not
experience variations in daylight hours during the course of a year.
Except for a few minutes resulting from a slight wobble in the earth as
it rotates, sunrise and sunset are always at 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.,
respectively.

2008-01-14 Thread Martin Pitt
The time zone database does not always list the captital of a country,
especially if there is another city which is much bigger and known
better. Do you have a city which appears in the tzdata db and is close
to you?
