[Bug 182743] Re: hardy xorg not detecting for compaq evo n410c

2008-05-12 Thread Bryce Harrington
1. The stub or blank xorg.conf files are actually normal. Xorg has
been working to make more and more of xorg.conf optional, and make the
xserver automatically detect and configure most hardware. So it is no
bug that the xorg.conf seems more empty than usual. There are some
situations where additional things need to be added to xorg.conf, but
that's fairly exceptional and probably not the case for this issue.

2. The Screens and Graphics (aka displayconfig-gtk) application is
deprecated in Hardy. The reason why it shows blanks is the consequence
of the blank xorg.conf. This is also part of the reason we're
deprecating the tool in Hardy.

3. In Hardy, -ati has been blacklisted for Compiz and is no longer
supported. This is because -ati still has too many bugs when running
with 3D compositing. It's true that a few people did find that compiz
worked ok for them with -ati, though, so it is possible to un-blacklist
it on your local system. See bug #197135 for discussion. You can
bypass the blacklist by starting compiz with SKIP_CHECKS=yes.

4. ~/.gnome2/monitors.xml - this is a file generated when you run the
Screen Resolution tool, to override the xserver defaults. On a freshly
installed or upgraded system, this file won't be present; it only
appears after you've used Screen Resolution. Deleting it is safe, and
just puts you back to the xserver defaults.

5. Touchpad doesn't work. This is probably unrelated, but hard to say
with the limited info given. Please see bugs #89517, #226433, or
#95418; if those don't match what you're seeing, file a new bug (see
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Reporting for details on what to include in bug
reports.)

6. X crashes for borfast. What you're seeing is probably an unrelated
bug, but you've not given enough info to troubleshoot - please see
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Reporting and file a new bug. Also, you should
probably also collect a backtrace - see
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing for directions.

So, issues 1, 2, and 4 are not actually bugs, and 3 is certainly a dupe.
5 and 6 are unrelated issues that need reported separately, and just got
linked here because of the red herring of xorg.conf being shorter than
expected. Thus I think we can close this bug as invalid, to help avoid
others getting confused.

2008-05-08 Thread Nick Russell
I get that distorted boot screen if I enter anything into xorg.conf
beyond the stub version above. The way I fixed a similar problem was by
deleting monitors.xml and regenerating xorg.conf with sudo dpkg-
reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg leaving it an empty stub.

I don't have a ~/.gnome2/monitors.xml

And that doesn't seem to make much sense: X's configuration in a gnome2
folder? Are you sure?

I have already tried displayconfig-gtk and it didn't work either. :(

[Bug 182743] Re: hardy xorg not detecting for compaq evo n410c

2008-05-07 Thread borfast
Sorry, looks like monitors.xml is indeed where you mentioned.

I am running Hardy on both my desktop and laptop but curiously, the filedoesn't
exist on my desktop - which is why I said I didn't have it.
Could this be because I upgraded my desktop from Gutsy?

Anyway, I deleted the file, as mentioned in the mailing list post you
referred and X didn't crash anymore - but only because X wasn't loading
at all, probably because it was trying to load the vesa driver, which I
had manually entered in xorg.conf.

Usually, the computer would just lock and I'd be forced to reboot. This
time I could access the terminal, edit xorg.conf and remove the driver
line. I restarted the computer and this time it tried to load X but
crashed, as usual, and not even Alt + SysRec + REISUB can reboot it.

The funny/interesting thing is that this time I got a different
background picture - the windows blue shutdown screen with the windows
logo. The image was all distorted, as you can see here, but still
recognizable.

I really don't get it... I am now going to reinstall the whole thing
from scratch and hope that it solves the problem...

2008-05-07 Thread borfast
Sorry, forgot to include the URL for the image of the distorted Windows screen:
http://www.borfast.com/public_files/winbuntu.jpg

And by the way, I just tried using the live CD with the option to Try
Ubuntu without any change to your computer and it behaved exactly the
same - which is normal, I guess.

But if I select the Install Ubuntu option, everything seems to work
just fine. Go figure...

xorg.conf is a stub in Hardy, so it's supposed to be largely empty.
Config is now in per user in your home folder /.gnome2/monitors.xml the
rest is done on the fly by xrandr. If xrandr isn't detecting your
hardward properly you could try sudo displayconfig-gtk. This will create
a new (filled in) xorg.conf for you.

Is this still an issue with current Hardy? I think we changed how
drivers are specified in xorg.conf since this bug report, so if you
reinstall, or regenerate your xorg.conf (e.g. sudo dexconf), it should
specify the driver now. Please try this out and let us know if ti's
still not working.

I think that I might have posted my info for a different reason. I am
not using an ATI card, but Nvidia. Normally the install will find my

time the only problem that I experience is that my touchpad was not
recognized but it realized that I had a 1280x800 monitor.
