Neither 111 nor 109 kernel nor any older would work with a full boot into system. So I was advised to get rid of the amdgpu drivers and make sure the open source AMD drivers are installed. https://amdgpu-install.readthedocs.io/en/latest/install-installing.html #uninstalling-the-amdgpu-graphics-stack amdgpu-uninstall https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-install-the-latest-amd-radeon-drivers-on- ubuntu-18-04-bionic-beaver-linux sudo add-apt-repository ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers sudo apt-get update sudo apt update && sudo apt -y upgrade Additionally I installed https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack though I am not sure if I had to also use that. Possibly simply uninstalling the amdgpu drivers that are not compatible with the latest kernel and switching to the open source Mesa release drivers would also have been an option, though this is speculation.
