I believe this problem occurs when users gateway returns a html page instead of the respective package file. The file '/var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_hardy_universe_i18n_Translation-fr' contains a package description (3dchess) which must be updated by removing ^M and adding '.' and spaces. The only thing I've noticed in those translations is two ’ (instead of ') in 3dchess description. I've changed this string yesterday in Launchpad. Obviously there's a problem with 3dchess description and, as I said previously, this has been fixed in Launchpad.
