[Bug 197156] Re: DNS problems when running VPN connections

2011-03-01 Thread Christoph Haas
It's been a while but I currently have this problem on Maverick (10.10)
on my laptop. After using UMTS to get into the internet and then opening
an OpenVPN connection to my company my /etc/resolv.conf looks like this:

=
# Dynamic resolv.conf(5) file for glibc resolver(3) generated by resolvconf(8)
# DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE BY HAND -- YOUR CHANGES WILL BE OVERWRITTEN
nameserver 139.7.30.126
nameserver 139.7.30.125
nameserver 10.x.y.z
search my.company
=

This leads to DNS problems when I want to resolve something.my.company
because the first DNS server of my ISP Vodafone (139.7.30.126) replies
with NXDOMAIN and thus I don't get an IP address via DNS. I have
resolvconf installed and according to the /etc/resolvconf/interface-
order the tun interface should have priority. But apparently the network
manager doesn't care about resolvconf.

[Bug 197156] Re: DNS problems when running VPN connections

2008-11-04 Thread svetylk0
in Intrepid Ibex:

when I installed kvpnc and vpnc packages, i also had problems with DNS
after disconnecting from VPN. There are also related bugs about this
error.

Nothing else helped me than: sudo apt-get remove --purge vpnc kvpnc
+ restart , and DNS work normally again .

Before this violent action :-) ,

sudo ifdown eth0
sudo ifup eth0
sudo dhclient eht0
#manual changing of /etc/resolv.conf
#PC restarts

none of these helped, DNS still resolved only adresses stored in cache
(probably)

[Bug 197156] Re: DNS problems when running VPN connections

2008-06-20 Thread Henning Eggers
Is network manager aware of resolvconf at all? On installation
resolvconf hooks itself into /etc/network, /etc/ppp and others. It seems
like network manager and resolvconf interfere with each others'
modifications on /etc/resolv.conf.

So the solution might be to either mark those two packages as mutually
exclusive or make the two aware of each other.

[Bug 197156] Re: DNS problems when running VPN connections

2008-06-19 Thread Evgeny Kuznetsov
Thanks for the hint, Henning. Actually, I have changed the ISP so I no
longer have the environment to test this problem again. Nevertheless,
you're, most probably, right about /etc/resolvconf/interface-order.

The only concern I still have is whether NetworkManager should make
changes to interface-order by itself, or maybe provide some UI for this.
As for me, it's not logical to check "Peer DNS through tunnel" in
NetworkManager, and then find out that tunnel's DNS is the last to be
considered.

Did you have a look at the man page of interface-order(5)? That should
be what you are looking for.
