After running a few checks I can say that the earlier problems are all gone and 'Hibernate' seems to work without any trouble. if you still see this problem please reopen this bug. ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid = Fix Released -- No Hibernate on HP DV8000 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/200227 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 200227] Re: No Hibernate on HP DV8000
The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test: 1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux- image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test. --or-- 2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD. Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback. ** Tags added: cft-2.6.27 -- No Hibernate on HP DV8000 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/200227 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that's the way you should do it. nope, you are right! that one of the corrects way. the other would be to run as root, but your sudo -i already does something similar. -- BUGabundo :o) (``-_-ยดยด) http://Ubuntu.BUGabundo.net Linux user #443786GPG key 1024D/A1784EBB My new micro-blog @ http://BUGabundo.net -- No Hibernate on HP DV8000 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/200227 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 200227] Re: No Hibernate on HP DV8000
Duncan, I think you did it wrong. You must do one of the following options: 1- $ sudo -i $ sync; echo 1 /sys/power/pm_trace; /etc/acpi/hibernate.sh force 2- $ sudo sync; sudo echo 1 /sys/power/pm_trace; sudo /etc/acpi/hibernate.sh force Note: The ';' char separates commands at the same line, so you only sudo'ed the sync command but not the remaining ones. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that's the way you should do it. -- No Hibernate on HP DV8000 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/200227 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 200227] Re: No Hibernate on HP DV8000
Hi Duncan, First, I'm reassigning this to the 'linux' package. Beginning with the Hardy development cycle the Ubuntu kernel source package naming convention changed from linux-source-2.6.xx to just linux. It is important to make sure bugs are assigned to the proper package to help ensure that it gets looked at by the appropriate developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . Next, if you could try the following, that would be great: 1) Care to update to the latest 2.6.24-15.26 kernel and verify this is indeed still an issue. 2) If the issue still exists, care to try forcing your machine into hibernation via the command line (execute as root user): sync; echo 1 /sys/power/pm_trace; /etc/acpi/hibernate.sh force 3) If the issue still exists, try step 2 again but log out of X and into a console before running the commands. 4) If you still experience the hibernate issue then per the kernel team bug policy please attach the following. Please be sure to attach each file as a separate attachment. * cat /proc/version_signature version.log * dmesg dmesg.log * sudo lspci -vvnn lspci-vvnn.log For more information regarding the kernel team bug policy, please refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies . Thanks again and we appreciate your help and feedback. ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Sourcepackagename: None = linux Assignee: Leann Ogasawara (leannogasawara) = (unassigned) Status: New = Incomplete -- No Hibernate on HP DV8000 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/200227 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 200227] Re: No Hibernate on HP DV8000
I'll second that. If a feature doesn't work on many laptop environments, I would call that a bug. If that feature is not seriously considered, it shouldn't be offered in a stable release. If there is an intended feature of Ubuntu which has a bug, It should be investigated, added to the list of bugs, and made known to others who might look at it. It should be scheduled to be fixed sometime, not simply ignored. Easy for me to say 'fix it', when I am not directly contributing to the code (writing code). But I know that unfortunately, I am not up to speed enough to be able to contribute in such a way, as I would like. But as a developer, I know the importance and value of a large group of willing testers. And Ubuntu has these. All those users who when finding a bug, don't just swear and curse the operating system, but try to help those who can fix it not just for them, but for everyone, by giving some of their valuable time to accurately describe the problem. I am quite sure everyone here who has reported information on this bug is willing to reply with any information that can help the development team of Ubuntu, should they be asked, in order to help make Ubuntu better for everyone. -- No Hibernate on HP DV8000 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/200227 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

But surely if my fresh installation presents me with a button for 'Hibernate' which doesn't work, then something is wrong?
