Following yet another clean install a couple of months ago, the situation at present is a hang at shutdown or restart but with the desktop background visible minus menu any panels. I installed a couple of packages - Bluefish and Filezilla then used the Network Settings to set up a Static IP address, installed Samba and pyNeighbourhood to connect to a Windows machine. Following that the problem returned. Wired network using Linksys WAG54GS Nvidia graphics card using NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver. + I have tried disabling the Nvidia restricted drivers and also removing the Network Manager packages without success.
