Hi swami-petaramesh, This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report. apport-collect -p linux-image-`uname -r` 226096 Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream- testing' tag. The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test: 1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux- image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test. --or-- 2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD. Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Same problem and symptoms here, with a Sitecom WL-011v2 card. Okay, I think I found the cause of the problem, this [ntdriver:3632] part of the error message that the remote user didn't tell me helped me isolate the problem : Both machines that hanged after upgrade have a Thomson WLG-1500A USB Wi- Fi adapter, which is driven via ndiswrapper and the "sis163u" windows driver. Unpluging this adapter allowed the machine to boot the new kernel without crashing. Now the issue seems to relate between this precise driver and ndiswrapper/kernel, for I have upgraded a laptop that also uses ndiswrapper for Wi-Fi (but with a different Wi-Fi susbsystem) and this one showed no problem. It's quite annoying that the use of the Thomson WLG-1500A USB Wi-Fi adapter + ndiswrapper causes such a major system lock-up after updrade, because this precise adapter has been given out by the major ISP in France (France Telecom / Orange / Wanadoo) to a huge number of customers, with its "livebox" DSL solution... So for sure you are gonna get tons of bugs reports related to the same adapter... Sh*t ! I just get the same problem after upgrading yet another AMD processor Gusty machine to Hardy :-( So that makes 2 updated machines for me that don't boot and hang with « soft lockup-CPU#0 » after upgrade. I upgraded 5 machines, 2 of them won't boot. Really makes a bad percentage :-( This one boots, mounts rootfs, then during startup of services hangs with : « BUG : soft lockup-CPU#0 stuck for 11 s ! [ntdriver:3632] » and this repeats forever... This gives a little more insight : There's a problem with this "ntdriver" but so far I have no clue about what it does...
