I got the same problem like befor. I used the apt sources list entries deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/openjdk/ubuntu hardy main deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/openjdk/ubuntu hardy main and installed with aptitude on my Linux v30673.1blu.de 2.6.9-023stab046.2 #1 Mon Dec 10 14:50:57 MSK 2007 i686 hosted vServer. for curiosity's sake, what was the difference in the way it was rebuilt, and would it be an undesirable sacrifice in performance for the majority of i686 users? I say this because if it is, it may not be worth it, as i found ubuntu on this via c3 system too slow for meaningful use anyway. And I'd switched to pyroom instead of jdarkroom even on a fast box. Having said that, JDarkRoom on openjdk on this box is surprisingly usable. That build works for me! It installed perfectly and runs JDarkRoom without apparent issues. please recheck with a test rebuild from the opnjdk PPA; unfortunately the version number of this build is lower than the one found in hardy- proposed. To install: - if hardy-proposed is not in /etc/apt/sources.list, add the line "deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/openjdk/ubuntu hardy main" and install the packages - go directly to https://edge.launchpad.net/~openjdk/+archive or http://ppa.launchpad.net/openjdk/ubuntu/pool/main/o/openjdk-6/, download the packages for your architecture directly and install this all at once using dpkg -i. Crossing over from #230891 which has been marked a duplicate of this bug. I'd initially submitted it as a separate bug because I wasn't getting the instability with gnome et al; the system as a whole was stable, it was just openjdk that wouldn't install because of this. A comment added on that bug says: " the package is built with -mcpu=585 -mtune=generic, so it should run on the Via processors." (I presume he meant -mcpu=i586 :-) ) Anyway, that was just answering my speculation on a possible cause (that it might have been built for 686 and thus executing CMOV which Via C3 doesn't support). For myself, I actually ended up putting Gentoo on that machine. Building everything as "-Os -mmmx -m3dnow -fomit-frame-pointer" actually, in this case, really did make a big difference to the usability of the system in a desktop environment (even if it did take a week to install!).
