Hi Leann, I just installed the karmic package linux-image-2.6.31-9-generic. Booting it led to a blank screen, but that's probably because I forgot to disable kernel modesetting. I'll try that again. Also, I am attaching a syslog of a typical freeze. I don't see anything unusual before the freeze, so I am only including the output of Alt-SysRq-Q,W,M after/during the freeze. It still is unfortunately. It hadn't happened for a long time and then another freeze occured a couple of days ago. I am not sure if the system was under heavy load, though. I am currently using a kernel.org kernel version 2.6.30.5. If you want the kernel configuration or anything else, let me know. To anyone else having this issue: Try Alt-SysRq-R,W,Q,T,M,S,E,I,U,B (i.e., hold down Alt and SysRq and then press the letters in the given order) and then post the syslog output. Hi xt28, Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . Please then run following command from a Terminal (Applications-Accessories-Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report. apport-collect -p linux-image-`uname -r` 228168 Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream- testing' tag. I also experience frequent system freezes under heavy load. Even though I am using Ubuntu 9.04 (amd64), I had the very same problems with Ubuntu 8.10 (i386), too. The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test: 1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux- image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test. --or-- 2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD. Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'.
