I've replaced the preliminary eeepc driver in F9 with the final eeepc-laptop driver from rawhide/2.6.26. If that one doesn't work by using the input layer to push the events then you are asking for a rewrite of the driver. Do the backlight keys show a popup when in GNOME? The other keys not working is a bit of a problem, but they're not expected to work out-of-the-box for the most part. I checked out the eeepc-laptop driver in the linux-next git tree, and it doesn't pass those extra keys through the input layer (so the keys aren't visible in user-space). Could you check whether you see any error messages in dmesg when using the keys, or whether the keys work using "xev" while running X? I've tried it with a fresh install (now updated to Jaunty RC), and now just tried it with the Andy's kernel packages -- all have the same effect: No response to the wireless toggle normally, Inserting the rfkill-input module, the pushing the wireless toggle causes the wireless to toggle off properly (blue light goes off). Pushing the wireless toggle again causes the light to come back on, but the wireless module fails to load. Unloading and then reloading the module has no effect (the module fails to load again). I have attached the relevant sections of my syslog. ** Attachment added: Syslog entries after wireless toggling http://launchpadlibrarian.net/25636758/Wireless%20Errors.txt -- EeePC Volume and Wireless Hotkeys Do Not Function Out-Of-The-Box with Ubuntu (8.04 Hardy LTS, Intrepid Alpha 1) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/232170 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Inserting rfkill-input is necessary (I suppose some hal magic should insert it automatically); but for now, inserting it manually is required. For the rest, I suppose your posted log is from a stock jaunty kernel. The kernel from Andy should contain backport of the patches included in kernel 2.6.29. So either we forgot a patch somewhere, or another module changed in the kernel. Troy: Two things that it might be worth mentioning: After you've done the toggling does /usr/bin/sudo iwlist scan report results? The next thing is if so does restarting Network Manager /etc/dbus/event.d/25NetworkManager restart help? If the first thing doesn't even work it sounds like the wifi driver is wedged. Andy: With your kernel build, wireless , sound, brightness and sleep keys work OK ( just as fine as the custom build I used) on my eeepc 701. The only change I need to get everything working out of the box is to add rfkill_input to /etc/modules (maybe some hal magic should do it for me somewhere). So I suppose with this patch applied and delivered with Ubuntu's kernel, this patch may be closed. To answer to Sitsofe remark: I see two possibilities to address the pciehp_force=1 problem: - Either, Matthew proposed patch to work around this problem should also be applied ( http://marc.info/?l=linux-kernelm=123549146723314w=4 ). - Or, as this option is not installed by any package on Ubuntu, only people upgrading from intrepid (or another version) and who modified their grub configuration should be impacted (I suppose such guys should also be able to remove the option). It's problematic on debian installation because it's added by the eeepc-acpi-scripts package. But this one is not installable in Ubuntu (see bugs #262679 and #328989). -- EeePC Volume and Wireless Hotkeys Do Not Function Out-Of-The-Box with Ubuntu (8.04 Hardy LTS, Intrepid Alpha 1) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/232170 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Matthew's patch works well for me except every now and then the wifi hotkey will not work (but the sound ones will).
[Bug 232170] Re: EeePC Volume and Wireless Hotkeys Do Not Function Out-Of-The-Box with Ubuntu (8.04 Hardy LTS, Intrepid Alpha 1)
Following Sitsofe suggestion, I tried Matthew's patch on my eeepc 701. At least, I get the volume keys working. I still have issues with the wireless and display one; that needs some investigations. I also noticed that this patch activates the wifi card when loaded.
[Bug 232170] Re: EeePC Volume and Wireless Hotkeys Do Not Function Out-Of-The-Box with Ubuntu (8.04 Hardy LTS, Intrepid Alpha 1)
Oliver: The display one is going to be problematic. These days you are expected to switch displays when X is running by using xrandr rather than poking the BIOS behind X's back (so really the key should be passed to a running program that then does the switch). You could argue that not having a means to do that is a separate bug from this though. Re wifi always activated on boot, yes I noticed that too. You're absolutely right. It's not hard to toggle off again though. What other issues were you having with the Wireless hotkey though? You are using pciehp_force too? -- EeePC Volume and Wireless Hotkeys Do Not Function Out-Of-The-Box with Ubuntu (8.04 Hardy LTS, Intrepid Alpha 1) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/232170 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 232170] Re: EeePC Volume and Wireless Hotkeys Do Not Function Out-Of-The-Box with Ubuntu (8.04 Hardy LTS, Intrepid Alpha 1)
Current problems (still need further investigations): - Display button make the volume to go up. Maybe a bad key configuration somewhere. - Wireless button does not do anything; wireless is turned on when the module is loaded but nothing happens when I press the toggle off button. And yes, I'm using pciehp_force=1.
BTW, I've added bluetooth control (a very minor change) to eeepc- laptop.ko, based upon more recent (and deprecated) eeepc-acpi.ko code to my local clone of ubuntu-intrepid.git: commit e3c8316f0a41fdea91ee1e087578119000f24a9f Author: Adam McDaniel Date: Mon Sep 22 16:53:06 2008 -0600 EEEPC: Added bluetooth attribute to /sys/devices/platform/eeepc/bt accessible through eeepc-laptop module, just like deprecated eeepc-acpi module. Eventually this can be used to switch the built-in bluetooth radio on/off in this eeepc-laptop module, too, without the need of user-space ACPI scripts. Unfortunately, I cannot test this patch directly as I don't have an EeePC 901/1000/1000h. If someone with one could apply it and verify if /sys/devices/platform/eeepc/bt is created, and writing 0 or 1 will disable/enable it. (Devices that lack on-board bluetooth should not see this file.) ** Attachment added: Patch to add on-board bluetooth radio control to eeepc-laptop.ko http://launchpadlibrarian.net/17936768/commit-e3c8316 -- EeePC Volume and Wireless Hotkeys Do Not Function Out-Of-The-Box with Ubuntu (8.04 Hardy LTS, Intrepid Alpha 1) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/232170 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Fedora have a fix for the volume keys that works for my upstream kernel too - https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=451182 . It also enables support for the wifi hotkey too (with the caveat that wifi will always been enabled on boot and that you have to use the pciehp.pciehp_force=1 boot parameter). Very elegant too. ** Tags added: linux-2.6.27 -- EeePC Volume and Wireless Hotkeys Do Not Function Out-Of-The-Box with Ubuntu (8.04 Hardy LTS, Intrepid Alpha 1) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/232170 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Should these hotkeys be controlled with the eeepc_laptop driver? I cannot find an answer on this anywhere. It seems that eeepc-acpi has been deprecated in favor of this new module. The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test: 1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux- image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test. --or-- 2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD. Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback. ** Tags added: cft-2.6.27 -- EeePC Volume and Wireless Hotkeys Do Not Function Out-Of-The-Box with Ubuntu (8.04 Hardy LTS, Intrepid Alpha 1) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/232170 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
