I have a Sony Vaio VGN-A197VP with the same keys and the same behavior as described above, using Jaunty. Didn't work with Intrepid and Hardy either. I have a VAIO A617s which is essentially the same model (looks the same) I have updated my Gusty install to Hardy and am sad to report that the problem remains. There is an effort to make hotkeys work on all Sony Vaio models that use ACPI at http://tjworld.net/snc/ It doesn't list the models VGN-A190 and VGN-A397XP yet.
