[Bug 234484] Re: heavy network activity stalls network (on both ends)

2009-07-14 Thread kernel-janitor
Hi faassen,

Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development
release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . Please then run following command
from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will
automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this
report.

apport-collect -p linux-image-`uname -r` 234484

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would
be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the
issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once
you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-
testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon
next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and
deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your
results.

Thanks in advance.

[Bug 234484] Re: heavy network activity stalls network (on both ends)

2009-01-11 Thread LuisMondesi
We got bitten by this very bug! I spent a long time making sure it
wasn't anything on our network but what clear things up for me was this:

copying from Hardy to Hardy works
copying from Hardy to Solaris does not
copying from Solaris to Solaris works

So, obviously it's not the network devices that are wrong. So, I started
digging and found a lot of information about stalling issues for scp and
large files and the use of scp -vvv to hint at the problem.

scp -l works fine if the limit is relatively small. (100Kb/s or so).
very annoying.

[Bug 234484] Re: heavy network activity stalls network (on both ends)

2009-01-06 Thread Yann
I experience this very annoying bug since several months (after updating
from the nice Dapper LTS to Hardy one): I initially suspected a bad
network connection at one end but it seems this is not the problem.

I also observe that SCP tranfer rates and ETA are false and not updated
during the copies... and on very large files (50/100Mbytes), most of the
time it finish as "stalled" probably because this timing/counter issue
triggers a stop to the scp command.

It seems to be a client side problem, not server side... SFTP does not
seems concerned (and can be used to finish a long scp stalled file
transfer without needing to restart from the beginning). As well,
windows XP client scponly does not seems affected and can manage several
100 Mbytes transfers from a hardy openssh server without issues.

I found an upstream solved issue that could be related:
https://bugzilla.mindrot.org/show_bug.cgi?id=799

The correction should be done in Hardy shipped version because of it's
LTS status imo.

Regards

2008-09-22 Thread Steve Checkoway
I have the same issue. It transfers 2064 kB and then stalls. I can
duplicate this with this file over and over and it's always exactly 2064
kB before it stalls.

$ scp deps.png lonely:www
deps.png 15% 2064KB 647.7KB/s -
stalled -

If I leave it alone long enough, it will eventually complete the
transfer.

Dear Ubuntu kernel team,

I downloaded kernel 2.6.27 from this URL (nearest one)
http://ftp.gui.uva.es/sites/ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/l/linux/linux-image-2.6.27-1-server_2.6.27-1.2_amd64.deb

The results are the same, no luck this time :(

Please let me know if I can do anythong else.

Yours,

Pedro

[Bug 234484] Re: heavy network activity stalls network (on both ends)

2008-08-28 Thread Leann Ogasawara
The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the
upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would
appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel.
There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-
image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and
test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer
2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4.
Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced.
You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the
bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please
open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the
2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please
specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26
kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

[Bug 234484] Re: heavy network activity stalls network (on both ends)

2008-08-25 Thread pedrusko
Possible same issue on upgraded 8.04 and 6.10.

When I connect from the same IP subnet all goes OK, but when I pass
through a router or firewall the copy is stalled. The rest of network
traffic seems to be ok.

Tested on different machines all with different gigabit ethernet cards,
and with different connections:

* Case 1: Standard 64 bit PC w/ Ubuntu 8.04 Desktop and gigabit ethernet
connected to a 100 Mbit switch -> gateway (Linux box with IPtables
enabled to run as firewall) -> Cisco PIX -> Cisco router -> Destination
machine (Sun Fire x2200 w/ Ubuntu 8.04 Server).

* Case 2: same as case 1 but destination machine has Ubuntu 6.10.

* Case 3: same as case 1 and 2 but destination machine is a Compaq
laptop running non-ubuntu Linux.

* Case 4: Standard Pentium 4 PC w/ gigabit ethernet card connected to a
gigabit switch -> Linksys DSL router -> (public Internet) -> Unknown
router -> Standard AMD Opteron PC w/ 100 mbit network card running
Ubuntu 8.04 server.

I solved the issue adding the "-l" parameter to scp, ranges below the
maximum net troughput runs ok, values larger ends to a stalled
connection.

Examples:
 bad transfer
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ scp VMware-server-1.0.6-91891.tar.gz [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/tmp
[EMAIL PROTECTED]'s password:
VMware-server-1.0.6-91891.tar.gz2% 2204KB 1.3MB/s - stalled -

 good transfer
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ scp -l 1 VMware-server-1.0.6-91891.tar.gz [EMAIL
PROTECTED]:/tmp
[EMAIL PROTECTED]'s password:
VMware-server-1.0.6-91891.tar.gz 100% 102MB 1.2MB/s 01:24

[Bug 234484] Re: heavy network activity stalls network (on both ends)

2008-05-23 Thread Martijn Faassen
Not really having a clue what I'm looking for, I still tried wireshark
(on the Feisty machine while copying to the Hardy machine). Capturing
data seems to have the odd effect of making the problem less severe: the
large file copy continues while the rest of network isn't completely
disrupted, though once every while things do stall.

I see a large number of [TCP Out-Of-Order] messages and [TCP
Retransmission] messages. I also see a large amount of TCP Dup Ack]
being sent back from the Hardy machine. Whether this has anything to do
with the problem I do not know.
