[Bug 238835] Re: persistent failure with DVD mounting, reading, writing
I've had this too, and fixed it with a kernel option, although I'm not sure which one just now. I believe it's one of the options listed in brasero bug #200337 (on launchpad). I also believe these bugs should be merged. -- persistent failure with DVD mounting, reading, writing https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/238835 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Thanks, Leann. I kept this open, hoping I would have time to test this--mostly for the benefit of others, since I have a working solution. Let's tidy up and close it. Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: I haven't been able to use my DVD burner (Sony DRU530A) since the release of Edgy (worked in Dapper); problem has persisted with each release since. No media (CDs and DVDs, regardless of content [data, audio, video; commercial or other]) can be mounted on the drive (scd1). The burner works in WinXP, and I recently loaded Windows to upgrade the firmware--this did not resolve any issues. I'm currently running Ubuntu 8.04. As a late report, I was unable to again get this drive running under more recent releases, so I shoved it in a non-Linux machine, where it whirrs happily. I replaced the drive with a Lite-on, and Ubuntu handles all reading and writing processes with no problem. I have not tried the Sony drive with the upstream kernel--maybe this is our solution (I won't be able to test this for a while.) [Bug 238835] Re: persistent failure with DVD mounting, reading, writing
Hi calanscott, This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications-Accessories-Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report. apport-collect -p linux-image-`uname -r` 238835 Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream- testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance. [This is an automated message. [Bug 238835] Re: persistent failure with DVD mounting, reading, writing
This is an update to my previous comment. I downloaded compiz-ccsm (to manage the effects of compiz), enabled Expo plugin (under compiz), and this has, to my complete surprise, fixed my problem. Now DVDs autmount and play without any problems. I have an GeForce Fx5200 video card. Originally I had used the proprietary Nvidia driver for my video card when prompted by the system because I wanted to take advantage of the eye candy compiz has to offer. The default compiz effects for compiz under ubuntu 8.10 include Desktop Wall, but my DVD won't mount under this plugin. It wasn't until I downloaded the the compiz-ccsm and enabled the Expo plugin that DVD automouting started to work. Very strange, but I've had consistent results, so to summarize my situation: automounting DVDs doesn't work if compiz is disabled, but works if compiz is enabled and Expo plugin is used. -- persistent failure with DVD mounting, reading, writing https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/238835 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 238835] Re: persistent failure with DVD mounting, reading, writing
Ok, sorry, I spoke too soon. Only about a third of the DVDs automount. I thought it might be a problem with DVD regions, so I downloaded regionset and set the DVD player to region 1 ( I bought my DVDs in the US and the DVD drive was obtained in Canada), but this did not fix the problem, so maybe the ubuntu bug is still persisting in this case. -- persistent failure with DVD mounting, reading, writing https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/238835 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 238835] Re: persistent failure with DVD mounting, reading, writing
Seems like I might have this bug as well. I have been able to automount CDs using both my CD and DVD drives, but DVDs will not mount manually or otherwise, and I had to manually add the DVD drive info to /etc/fstab after installation (Ubuntu 8.10 with all current updates). The bios detected both drives prior to installation, so I don't know why the ubuntu installation allows only my CD drive to be seen in /etc/fstab. #uname -rv 2.6.27-9-generic #1 SMP Thu Nov 20 21:57:00 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux #sudo cdrecord -scanbus scsibus1: 1,0,0 100) 'YAMAHA ' 'CRW2200E' '1.0D' Removable CD-ROM 1,1,0 101) 'LG ' 'DVD-ROM DRD8160B' '1.01' Removable CD-ROM 1,2,0 102) * 1,3,0 103) * 1,4,0 104) * 1,5,0 105) * 1,6,0 106) * 1,7,0 107) * #vi /etc/fstab . . . /dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0 /dev/scd1 /media/cdrom1 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0 #sudo mount -t udf /dev/scd1 /media/cdrom1 mount: No medium found I am not a linux coder, just an avid user, but if I can be of further assistance, let me know. [Bug 238835] Re: persistent failure with DVD mounting, reading, writing
I believe I am affected by this bug as well. Burned DATA DVDs can't seem to be mounted. I have tested kernel 2.6.27-7 and 2.6.27-11 on Intrepid. Blank DVDs are seen normally and I have no trouble burning. However, once they are burned, they can't be mounted. I have tested several brands of blank DVDs, different computers/drives running Ubuntu, and burning with different applications. I have not found a fix yet. Testing the burned DVDs in other devices (ie. PS3) show that they can be mounted and used normally. No messages are recorded in logs, but attempting to mount the disc manually produces this error: mount: No medium found Let me know if you need more information to track this down. -- persistent failure with DVD mounting, reading, writing https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/238835 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 238835] Re: persistent failure with DVD mounting, reading, writing
The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test: 1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux- image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test. --or-- 2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD. Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback. ** Tags added: cft-2.6.27 -- persistent failure with DVD mounting, reading, writing https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/238835 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
