Marking as invalid, since this bug doesn't appear with the latest gnome-
terminal (2.30.1) stable release.

Please reopen if you think the bug is still alive in a previous version of
gnome-terminal still supported.
(not sure, but this bug were fixed upstream some time ago)

[Bug 243596] Re: gnome-terminal scrollback leak

2009-06-30 Thread ideasman42
On startup...
mem usage: gnome-terminal - VirtMem 52, ResMem 15.1, WritableMem4.5, SharedMem
10.5, XServerMem 6kb , Memory 4.5

Run ls...
ls -R # (a 17mb file)

mem usage (1 tabs): gnome-terminal - VirtMem 154.3, ResMem 116.8,
WritableMem 107.2, SharedMem 9.6, XServerMem 6kb , Memory 107.2

Open a new tab.
Run ls...
ls -R # (a 17mb file)
mem usage (2 tabs): gnome-terminal - VirtMem 257.7, ResMem 220.2, WritableMem
210.5, SharedMem 9.7, XServerMem 6kb , Memory 210.5

Open a new tab.
Run ls...
ls -R # (a 17mb file)
mem usage (3 tabs): gnome-terminal - VirtMem 360.7, ResMem 322.9, WritableMem
313.6, SharedMem 9.3, XServerMem 6.7kb , Memory 313.6

Open a new tab.
Run ls...
ls -R # (a 17mb file)
mem usage (4 tabs): gnome-terminal - VirtMem 464.0, ResMem 426.3, WritableMem
417.0, SharedMem 9.3, XServerMem 6.8kb , Memory 417.0

Now open a new tab do nothing in it.

Now I close the tabs and measure memory for each tab closed that had a lot of
data in it, leave the empty one open.
mem usage (4 tabs): VirtMem 463.6, ResMem 425.9, WritableMem 416.6, SharedMem
9.4, XServerMem 6.8kb , Memory 416.6
mem usage (3 tabs): VirtMem 463.2, ResMem 425.6, WritableMem 416.2, SharedMem
9.4, XServerMem 6.7kb , Memory 416.2
mem usage (2 tabs): VirtMem 462.8, ResMem 425.2, WritableMem 415.8, SharedMem
9.4, XServerMem 6.7kb , Memory 415.8
mem usage (1 tab) VirtMem 462.4, ResMem 424.8, WritableMem 415.4, SharedMem
9.4, XServerMem 6.6kb , Memory 415.4

Now there is only a blank terminal and ~462mb is being used.

[Bug 243596] Re: gnome-terminal scrollback leak

2009-06-30 Thread Chris Jones
fwiw I think this bug is indeed Invalid. The size of the heap is the
responsibility of glibc to manage and it appears (from what I've quickly turned
up with google) to not aggressively shrink heap sizes.
To show a memory leak you would need to run multiple iterations of the test in
tabs of the same gnome-terminal process and show that memory usage increases
each time. if you can run multiple iterations and the overall size remains
roughly constant then it is not a leak (to the best of my understanding of
these things, which is admitedly minimal).
