Please reopen if you think the bug is still alive in a previous version of gnome-terminal still supported. fwiw I think this bug is indeed Invalid. The size of the heap is the responsibility of glibc to manage and it appears (from what I've quickly turned up with google) to not aggressively shrink heap sizes.
