[Bug 250266] Re: "open with" application list has duplicates and is unsorted

2009-02-22 Thread Martin G Miller
This has been an ongoing problem for me for years. The list presented
makes no sense in terms of the order the apps are presented. Also,
since there are multiple entries for many apps, why are they not listed
together? They are scattered at random throughout the list.

If "the list is sorted using the mimetype associations to list the most
likely applications that should be used first, that's not a bug" were
true, all the duplicate entries should be listed together, but they are
not. For example, Brasero Disk Burning is listed 5 times scattered
through the list.

Duplicate entries are created every time you open the menu editor and change
something. They are found in
~/.local/share/applications so you can weed them out. This is a separate bug.

I am mainly concerned with the listed order of apps.

Please reopen this. It's not a feature, it's a bug. There should be a
choice to list the apps alphabetically.

[Bug 250266] Re: "open with" application list has duplicates and is unsorted

2008-12-30 Thread sproaty
Same here, MichaelIM. The application list does not change regardless of
the filetype, I tested the "open with..." dialogue on 3 different
filetypes: .py, .jpg, .ps and the order of the list was the same.

I think a preference to change the sorting clause would be the best
solution

[Bug 250266] Re: "open with" application list has duplicates and is unsorted

2008-09-14 Thread MichaelM
I was about to file a new bug report but found this one.

I am fairly certain that from a usability point of view, this is
definitely a bug. I have the open with dialog up trying to open a text
file (with a .txt extension). The dialog recognises the file type, but
the application listing is:

OpenOffice.org Drawing
OpenOffice.org Presentation
Firefox Web Browser
Remote Desktop Viewer
etc...

This ordering makes no sense. The text editors I have installed are
scattered throughout the list. This list should be sorted alphabetically
so a user can find the application they need.

[Bug 250266] Re: "open with" application list has duplicates and is unsorted

2008-07-24 Thread knut

ok, maybe sort by name can be included in the wish list. The proposed list is
not always good for unknown files and thus it would be nice to have a list
sorted by names if I already know which application is the right one.

Concerning the dublicates, in my example I have some entries which are
exactly the same (icon + description) and some seem to be the same
(similar description). One entry is there three times...

I can confirm both parts of this bug - duplicate entries and unsorted.
I will mark as Triaged since we should have enough information for a
developer to start working on this.
