[Bug 272089] Re: Show/hide shows the program on the workspace that was active when docked
Interestingly enough, I tried to implement this feature tonight. However, it seems that libwnck's API call for moving windows between workspaces… well, doesn't. :-/ I'll see if I can try to track down why and file a bug with them and maybe even come up with a patch to get that fixed. AllTray seeks to not duplicate code, so the best place to fix that problem is upstream on libwnck. -- Show/hide shows the program on the workspace that was active when docked https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/272089 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 272089] Re: Show/hide shows the program on the workspace that was active when docked
@claim The current development version brings to the front the workspace that an application exists in when it is un-hidden. I think it might be possible to move the application's windows to another workspace, and I'll consider it. For now, I'll mark this bug as incomplete, pending future discussion. The thing is that I am relatively sure that this is behavior that can be dictated by local window manager policy. I'd like to confirm that, though, and since it doesn't fit my use case, I will have to do some research on that. I can see that Pidgin works differently, and perhaps it'd be useful to mimic that behavior (though, are there other applications that work that way, as well? That'd be useful to find out). ** Changed in: alltray (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid = Incomplete -- Show/hide shows the program on the workspace that was active when docked https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/272089 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 272089] Re: Show/hide shows the program on the workspace that was active when docked
Sorry if I sound arrogant, but I don't quite approve disregarding this bug report, explaining that 'it's not a bug, it's a feature.' Regardless of whether it was a deliberate decision or an accident that alltray works in such a way now, it doesn't change the fact the users find it confusing and counter-intuitive. Morevoer, the workaround you suggested, Michael, is not what me and probably many other users would expect. Let me explain: when I show (unhide) a docked application, I'd expect it to stay in the workspace I did the showing, so to say. Whereas with the --sticky option it will appear on any other workspace I'd move on to, instead of staying in the one it was shown/unhidden. pidgin, which was mentioned in this discussion, does stay in the workspace where it was originally shown - just like many other applications, which in turn is the probable reason why the users expect alltray to work likewise. I really apologise if you find my tone annoying, it was not my intention. I have a deep sense of gratitude for all the work you've been working. However, I believed I should say that because I am aware that it's very easy to lose the application user's perspective and consider your software almost entirely from the point of view of its creator.
@Bruce this is not a bug, you should use the option ‘--sticky (-st)’ to show the application on all workspaces ;-) (check the alltray manpage to more info) -- Show/hide shows the program on the workspace that was active when docked https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/272089 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Thanks for another fine explanation. Michael B. Trausch wrote: If you click the window on the window list, it'll take you to that workspace and window. It doesn't actually do that for me (switch workspace), at least not when using Metacity. Can you reproduce? Package: metacity 1:2.22.0-0ubuntu4 Hrm, interesting; it seems that compiz works as it should, and metacity does not. Looks like a bug needs to be filed against metacity, though if you can, you should check to see if the but still exists in the version of Metacity in Intrepid. --- Mike -- My sigfile ran away and is on hiatus.

Thanks, that makes sense. Combined with a Devil's Pie script which automatically pins the window (Always on Visible Workspace) this will do fine. Just wondering, could the fact that it still appears on the Window List applet be seen as a bug though? -- Show/hide shows the program on the workspace that was active when docked https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/272089 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

When a new window is opened on another workspace, or it gets the URGENT window manager hint, it shows up in the window list on all other workspaces so that you know that the window wants attention from you. Good feature, that. :) Pidgin, for example, sets the WM hint when you receive a new IM, so that you can see that the window wants your attention. If you click the window on the window list, it'll take you to that workspace and window. -- My sigfile ran away and is on hiatus. -- Show/hide shows the program on the workspace that was active when docked https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/272089 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
