[Bug 278069] Re: hal CUPS backend does not work with libusb

2009-07-22 Thread Till Kamppeter
As HAL is deprecated the hal-cups-utils will get removed from Karmic and
the hal CUPS backend will get discontinued and not replaced. The hal-
cups-utils package will also get discontinued upstream. Your printer
will work with the usb CUPS backend. Therefore we are closing this bug
report.

[Bug 278069] Re: hal CUPS backend does not work with libusb

2009-04-26 Thread mbrudka
Similiar problem exists in Jaunty for Brother HL-2030. But for my printer a
simple solution:
[code]
  sudo chmod 700 /usr/lib/cups/backend/hal
  sudo chmod 700 /usr/lib/cups/backend/usb
[/code]
was enough. Nevertheless I proposed to modify the distribution to have a valid
permission for cups backends!

2009-04-26 Thread Till Kamppeter
mbrudka, can you post the output of

ls -l /dev/usb/lp* /dev/usblp* /dev/bus/usb/*/*
lsusb
lsusb -vvv

It seems that there are some broken UDEV rules messing up the device
file permissions.

[Bug 278069] Re: hal CUPS backend does not work with libusb

2009-04-17 Thread Tor
I am not sure if what I have is this bug or something similar. Every
now and then (seen on gNewSense DeltaH (essentially Hardy) and Kubuntu
Hardy) printing will quit working, with the job staying forever in the
queue, processing, and the printer doing nothing. I have twice so far
gotten it to start again (on gNewSense) by the following procedure.
Please note that I have not had time to test removal of various pieces,
as this seems to be a somewhat random failure, and I do not know how to
cause the problem in the first place.

1. sudo rm /etc/cups/cupsd.conf /etc/cups/printers.conf ### ***should be cp
*.old or the like for safety***
2. sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys restart
3. sudo aptitude reinstall cupsys #Will produce errors; ignore
4. sudo cp /etc/cups/cupsd.conf.default /etc/cups/cupsd.conf
5. sudo cp /etc/cups/printers.conf.O /etc/cups/printers.conf
6. sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys restart
# If your files are like mine, your printer will appear to be disconnected.
Then:
7. Power cycle printer
8. Print a test document (perhaps that one you wanted to print in the first
place)

Good luck! No guaranties of course.:)
