[Bug 283790] Re: no sound after update to 2.6.24-21-generic

2008-12-01 Thread ricardisimo
I've got a bit of a problem, as do many who upgraded to Intrepid instead
of making a fresh install of it. The default apps to open certain files
have gone all crewy. So, folders were opening with f-spot instead of
nautilus, and PyPar2 was opening all sorts of things. Well, my system
doesn't know what to open shell scripts with right now. I've saved the
script as either alsa-info or alsa-info.sh, and neither is working. The
list of possible apps, as far as nautilus is concerned: Alarm Clock,
PyPar2, OOo Writer or Wine. Even a noob like myself can see that these
will not do it.

So, what will? I will run the script as soon as someone tells me what
app does it. Thanks.

Hmmm... I take it back. Maybe I did get it to open (with Autorun Prompt,
unless I am mistaken.) But it is producing no text file, at least not
that I can see. Is the script supposed to be some place in particular
when I run it, like my desktop, for example?

2008-11-29 Thread Leann Ogasawara
Hi Everyone,

So it seems the issue is slightly different now. It's not that you have
no sound, it's just the quality is not what you expect. It would be
helpful if we can gather some additional sound information from you
system. Please download and run the alsa-info.sh script - http://alsa-
project.org/alsa-info.sh - and attach the resulting alsa-info.txt file:

./alsa-info.sh --no-upload

2008-11-29 Thread JClift
I'm not sure whether this should be in with this bug or not.

 I've got a dell vostro 1310 (with same realtek soundcard) and have a
variation of this problem. i've never managed to get sound working at
all in hardy without a workaround and have to do it in with every kernel
update. When I do update the sound is extremely low and the media direct
buttons don't seem to map correctly.(it shows but does not always
adjust)...Should I be posting a separate bug, or do you think this is
related?

i just discovered that sound playback quality heavily depends on the
application to use
with hardy backports i did not have any sound at all
with intrepid i have sound, except when playing a dvd with vlc. sound is
totally choppy then. mplayer works just fine, while totem fails completely (but
i do not think this is a sound-related issue)

2008-11-11 Thread ricardisimo
I'm now on Intrepid, running kernel 2.6.27-7-generic. I have sound when
I play music files in Rhythmbox, but I still cannot make and select
custom sounds for login and logout, for example. DVD audio options are
screwy as well, but only on my comp... not in a DVD player. So, still
some sound-related problems.

By the way, I have selected Audacious as the default program for opening
my audio files, but when I double-click on any song I get instead
whatever the last-opened audio file was, rather than the one I now want
to hear. Why?

dmesg|grep snd provides no output on my computer. Sound works fine with
2.6.24-18. Oh well, I'll keep using that. By the way, a friend of mine
has a computer with virtually the same hardware and the motherboard and
graphics card are exactly the same, but he has sound on kernel
2.6.24-21 - strange.

If this workaround of Dell will work ( I have not applied yet...),
please consider the goals of Ubuntu. One of them is to make it for Users
as easy to work with as possible. Patching and implementing workarounds
is something for gurus like you not for the targeted PC Unsers.
Implementing this processes via normal updates would help to grow the
User friendlyness of Ubuntu.

If you need furter input don't hesitate to contact me.

2008-10-16 Thread Ian Mayne
Had the same problem with kernel 2.6.24-21-generic when it was in the
proposed updates. Gave bug report then about the issue. The kernel
update I got a few minutes ago to 2.6.24-21-generic has again disabled/
knocked out/OS no longer recognizes the sound card. I don't have a dell
(intimated above that it only happens to dell computers). Mine is a

gpu, 2gb ram, wd hard drives.

[Bug 283790] Re: no sound after update to 2.6.24-21-generic

2008-10-16 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Solved with adjusted Dell work around.

Zenith:

thanks for your link to the Dell workaround, which otherwise would be
very hard to find.

I did adjust the procedure for upgrading to kernel 2.6.24-21-generic

Restore name of sound driver that old modem driver renamed:
$ cd /lib/modules/2.6.24-21-generic/ubuntu/sound/alsa-driver/pci/hda
$ sudo mv snd-hda-intel.ko.REPLACEDBYhsfmodem snd-hda-intel.ko

Remove old sound drivers from kernel module directory:

$ cd /lib/modules/2.6.24-21-generic/updates
$ sudo rm snd-hda-intel.ko
$ sudo rm snd-hda-codec.ko

Rebuild initrd and reboot:

$ sudo depmod -a
$ sudo update-initramfs -u
$ sudo reboot

This brought back my sound working.

Thanks a lot,

Frank

[Bug 283790] Re: no sound after update to 2.6.24-21-generic

2008-10-16 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I can confirm that Dell added some packages for the preinstalled Dell
systems w/ Ubuntu 7.10 on it. Like to overcome licence issues playing
DVDs they added LinDVD or they provided drivers for the specific
Hardware built in the Laptop like the 56k modem.

But this specific work around was primeraly intended to solve issues w/
the built in hsf modem which looks to be a so called winmodem using the
Intel sound chip to emulate a analog modem.

As far I did follow announcemenst of Dell, they commited to provide
Linux based Hardware bundeled w/ Ubuntu. That's why I decided to buy
this Laptop. I love Ubuntu but from time to time you have to overcome
Hardware related driver stuff if you install Ubuntu on unkown
Hardware. This is always taken up my time at customer site and as an
Freelancer this produces addional costs, which is not always funny to
charge if M$ is onsite.

I ran the update an an Desktop just now and it looks like the sound
seems to be o.k.

But if you go through the postings it looks like other systems (non
Dell) are affected as well. So I think there is some further
investigation neccesary. If you do need further data from either systems
do not hesitate to ask for.

Frank

Last but not least: If Dell is comitted to Ubuntu the engenerring effort
of Dell should go into the Ubuntu devlopment and than distributed
through the Ubuntu channels. Parallel engeneering ends most likely in
trouble for user.

[Bug 283790] Re: no sound after update to 2.6.24-21-generic

2008-10-16 Thread Zenith
That's the same procedure i followed. I think it is a problem involving only
people who have added the ppa dell repository (
http://ppa.launchpad.net/dell-team/ubuntu ) to their software sources. Dell
team publishes a modified version of kernel with pre-built modules useful for
Dell systems. Unfortunately problems arise on kernel upgrade with packages not
coming from that repo.
Can you confirm this, Frank? Is Dell's repo present among your software
sources or the problem arised upgrading for official to official kernel
packages?

2008-10-15 Thread Kim Lofthouse
I'm having this same problem with my Inspiron too. Have tried various
fixes including check and installing any missing sound modules and
uninstalling and reinstalling ALSA. Still no joy!

Suggestions on a permanent fix for this anyone?

For the moment I'm just going to restore to a previous version of the
kernel until there's a permanent fix

[Bug 283790] Re: no sound after update to 2.6.24-21-generic

2008-10-15 Thread Zenith
Same problem, same distro, same kernel upgrade, and same laptop (Inspiron 6400
with SigmatelAudio). I posted some deeper information in another bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/270005 (already marked as duplicate).
Everything works as usual selecting the 2.6.24-19 image from grub, without any
change.
Loading of snd_hda_intel module seems not working in 2.6.24-21.
I would be happy to send everything could be useful

[Bug 283790] Re: no sound after update to 2.6.24-21-generic

2008-10-15 Thread Zenith
I solved the problem. The fact that all the systems affected by this problems
are Dells made me think about something related this family of machines.
I had personally added to the repositories the ppa's one (
http://ppa.launchpad.net/dell-team/ubuntu ) dedicated to dell systems (in my
case to enable 56k modem functionalities).
It is a known issue of kernel upgrades to loose sounds and a workaround is also
given by the dell-team.
http://linux.dell.com/wiki/index.php/Ubuntu_8.04/Issues/No_Sound_After_Distribution_Or_Kernel_Upgrade

Hope it could be useful.
