the new icons for attachments are IMHO not displayed for old messages.
After clicking on a messageheader the icon is displayed

(settings: download attachments on demand=yes)

Hmm!
what's the alternative ?
having inconsistent data (IMHO not acceptable for business use)
or
manually delete the local imap information to trigger a reload.

The attachment icon is only for information so I don't think that it is a
problem that it is only updated when you once clicked on the message.
Even deleting the local cache doesn't help as we only load the headers and they
don't tell you if the message has an attachment.

can we get a function - click all headers which is executed once the new

Perhaps it's worth a thought: We're (optionally) showing question marks
if the signatur/encryption state is not yet known for a message. Perhaps
we can use a special icon (somehow a question mark too) for not
completely downloaded messages / downloaded headers?
This would indicate clearly the state to the user. However I don't know
how difficult it is to implement that.

So does it mean that one has to download the messages to know if there is an
attachment.
if so - this should also be stated near the load attachement on demand option.

BTW are the messages + attachments cached locally - I have the
impression that not.

There are 2 things I am concerned off
1) not showing the user, that there is an attachment (because kmail does not
know/check it
2) useless traffic, because i do not need all attachments downloaded.

Re: [Bug 289875] Re: kmail doesn't always show attachment icon

2008-11-02 Thread Tim Holy
But it's different from how kmail worked in Hardy or any previous Kubuntu. Let
me try to be clearer:
1. Any email I've received since the upgrade shows the icon (if it has an
attachment, that is), even though I've quit and restarted kmail many times
since the upgrade.
2. Any email I received before the upgrade and have not clicked on to read
since I upgraded does not have the icon. But if I click on such a message
containing an attachment, the icon suddenly appears. The key observation is
that from that point forward that particular message always displays the
attachment icon, even if I quit and restart kmail.

So kmail is not making that decision from scratch every time I start it:
somewhere, it is storing the results of whether a message has an attachment.
The problem is that the upgrade must have deleted this information for all of
my old email, or the new kmail is failing to properly interpret the
information as it was stored previously. Either way, that's a bug.

A somewhat independent question is whether one could get kmail to go back
through all my old emails and re-calculate that status of each message. If the
bug arises by deleting old information, then that would be the only way to
repair the status of old emails. But if the bug is a failure to properly
interpret old formats, it's simply a question of fixing the application, and
the status of the old mails will be fixed without any additional effort.

This bug is one that makes a difference in practice: I might have received
hundreds of emails from Joe and yet only two messages contain attachments.
In my experience, a mail with an attachment is much more likely to be one that
I'll want to return to later, so this represents a significant piece of
information that saves me considerable time in finding the message I need.

I am not sure, but this appears like a feature to me, checking all mails
for attachments can take hours with a rather big collection of mails
(say a business account). Leaving as incomplete for now.

[Bug 289875] Re: kmail doesn't always show attachment icon

2008-10-27 Thread Tim Holy
Upon further inspection, it seems that this problem is confined to older
messages received before I upgraded to intrepid. Once a message with
attachment is clicked on, I can quit Kontact, restart, and the icon for
that message is properly displayed. However, messages that have never
been clicked on do not have the icon.
