I have a similar problem in Ubuntu 9.04. Sometimes when I hit "Shut down" in the System menu, the system will not halt but instead the gdm login screen turns up. Although they may not not related, this situation is very similar to this one: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/italc/+bug/367960 After this happens, I click the shutdown button on the login screen, and a message turns up saying something like: Will not halt unable to iterate IDE devices: No such files or directory But it still halts anyway, though there must be some problem for this to turn up. Same problem in a clean install of Ubuntu/kubuntu 9.04 on an Asus P5KPL-AM mobo. "unable to iterate IDE devices No such file or directory" message when shutdown, otherwise the shutdown procces seems OK, but a closer look shows that all connected peripherals - keyboard, mouse, KVM-switch, USB-scanner - is left with power on. And there seems to bee no other way than the psu switch to close them down. Same result if I boot another Linux OS from live-CD With so many reports similar problems in different distros/kernels, there must be some hardware compatibility problem. Any ideas on this ? I tried editing halt init script but the problem persisted. It is really annoying and quite dangerous too, as I too put my laptop in the bag thinking the power off was functioning. I am getting the same problem. It happen on my Aspire 5520 laptop when I went from Hardy Heron (8.04) to Intrepid Ibex (8.10). The computer stalls at the message (Unable to iterate IDE devices... ) and it won't shut down. I am attaching the three log files that were requested from others. I'm having the exact same problem. I get the same error. Clean install of Kubuntu 81.0 (just installed like 3 days ago).
