[Bug 305506] Re: The sound is choppy and slow ubuntu 8.10

2009-02-20 Thread svasilis
hi!

I installed 8.10 on a Toshiba Equim and the sound is distorted(choppy). I
searched around, tried a few things, but with no success.
Here is some information I got by typing some commands in the terminal window:
~
 List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices
card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: ALC861 Analog [ALC861 Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 6: Si3054 Modem [Si3054 Modem]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc IXP SB4x0 High Definition Audio
Controller (rev 01)
Subsystem: Toshiba America Info Systems Device ff10
Flags: bus master, slow devsel, latency 64, IRQ 16
Memory at c000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
Capabilities: access denied
Kernel driver in use: HDA Intel
Kernel modules: snd-hda-intel

So it finds the sound card, installs it, but sound does not come out properly
when playing games or trying to listen to music or even when I test the sound
card through the 'Sound' dialogue (SystemPreferencesSound).
Se P.S. of this post for detailed laptop configuration.

Please help!
Thank you very much!

Vasilis

Could you describe please what sound settings exactly were wrong and how
you solved the problem? And did the problem occur after a pulseaudio
update?

2008-12-07 Thread Steven Offord
Sorry I'm not sure about the pulseaudio update because I just set it to do
all the auto updates recomended after installing from the alternate download
CD.
The settings changes which seemed to sort it for five minits were
system/preferences/sound, and I thought it may have been
set for another sound card than my Toshiba equium has--?
I rebooted into the old XP to make sure it wasn't an electronic hardware
problem(it sounded a bit lke dying capacitors); all the sound worked OK
there.
I installed the Eee Ubuntu and the sound was OK there.am
re- installed the 8.10 and it was still the same Dr Who soundscape.
I've re-re-instaled from the USB start disc I made after the first
install-everything is fine now.-!???

Steve.

Status in alsa-driver source package in Ubuntu: Incomplete

 Bug description:
was not like it at first but sound has become pulsing distorted with slow
 music file playback.
affects everything skype, ipod , rhytmbox- all audio.
Started when using firefox when it also froze everything up, requiring
 re-start.
Tried everything, read lots of forum posts.even completly re-installed
 from alternate download CD.
 still just as bad.

update:- fixed it-system wasn't set for right sound card for my Toshiba
Equium. Still don't understand why it was OK for a week after my first
install, untill I'd added loads of packages fire fox add-ons, then it went
all wobbly sounding whilst I was on line. What changed the settings?

Okay, nice to hear it is working for you now.
I close this bug because the problem does not exist any more and there is no
way to find out what caused the problem.
