[Bug 305723] Re: MTU in 8.10 set to 576/ ignores override/ does not work with a lot of routers
@Thomas_a55 Please re-test with Karmic / 9.10 and let us know if it's still a problem. As Intrepid / 8.10 isn't an LTS release and is over a 1 1/2 old, there's little chance this problem would get fixed as an SRU. [Bug 305723] Re: MTU in 8.10 set to 576/ ignores override/ does not work with a lot of routers
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this bug as a bug in network-manager. When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the appropriate application's Help - Report a Problem menu or using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs. ** Package changed: ubuntu = network-manager (Ubuntu) -- MTU in 8.10 set to 576/ ignores override/ does not work with a lot of routers https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/305723 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 305723] Re: MTU in 8.10 set to 576/ ignores override/ does not work with a lot of routers
** Description changed: Ubuntu 8.10 (no problems with any previous release from 6.06) sets MTU size to 576 (ifconfig) on wired interface (here eth0) (previous releases takes the MTU value given by router DHCP - in this case 1500) which is to low for many routers. I have tested this with a number of different routers to find an acceptable value - 1000 seems to work on all routers in my collection. First found on a Netgear FVS318V3 (interestingly enough the V1 version of the FVS318 works ok with 8.10). Any way 8.10 should take the MTU value sent by DHCP if existing - some testing reveals that 8.04 also ignores the MTU value sent by the router (assuming that the router FVS318V3 performs according to documentation and sends MTU size - I have no means of verifying this as of now). Problem symptom is that communication starts up fine but as soon as something larger than 576 comes back it hangs (i.e. no response). Tried to override the MTU value statically but it gets ignored. Suggest setting a value around 1000 as default. Further more the PC:S I have tested this on has Gigabit cards - 576 is to low for those speeds. Maybe a default setting that varies with the potential speed of the card would be nice ? + + REQUESTED INFO: + I am glad to hear that 8.10 should not pick MTU size of 576, unfortunately I have had it on all 3 machines I have tested it on - all with different motherboards and processors (P4 and AMD 3000+) all with different network cards. Picking one (HP DX5150MT with AMD3000+) processor - here is the output from lshw: + works11 + description: Desktop Computer + product: IMEDIA D9214 + vendor: PACKARD BELL BV + version: PB80X01591 + serial: 100205570374 + width: 32 bits + capabilities: smbios-2.5 dmi-2.5 smp-1.4 smp + configuration: boot=normal chassis=desktop cpus=2 uuid=001C2503-AAE1-2007-0710-20155900 + *-core +description: Motherboard +product: Berkeley +vendor: Packard Bell BV +physical id: 0 +version: To be filled by O.E.M. +serial: ULPQ72600702 +slot: To Be Filled By O.E.M. + *-firmware + description: BIOS + vendor: American Megatrends Inc. + physical id: 0 + version: PBBERKMB.0400 (06/08/2007) + size: 64KiB + capacity: 448KiB + capabilities: isa pci pnp apm upgrade shadowing escd cdboot bootselect socketedrom edd int13floppy1200 int13floppy720 int13floppy2880 int5printscreen int9keyboard int14serial int17printer int10video acpi usb ls120boot zipboot biosbootspecification + *-cpu:0 + description: CPU + product: Genuine Intel(R) CPU2140 @ 1.60GHz + vendor: Intel Corp. + physical id: 4 + bus info: c...@0 + version: 6.15.2 + serial: -06F2---- + slot: CPU 1 + size: 1600MHz + capacity: 1600MHz + width: 64 bits + clock: 200MHz + capabilities: boot fpu fpu_exception wp vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss ht tm pbe nx x86-64 constant_tsc arch_perfmon pebs bts pni monitor ds_cpl est tm2 ssse3 cx16 xtpr lahf_lm cpufreq + configuration: id=0 + *-cache:0 + description: L1 cache + physical id: 5 + slot: L1-Cache + size: 64KiB + capacity: 64KiB + capabilities: internal write-back data + *-cache:1 + description: L2 cache + physical id: 6 + slot: L2-Cache + size: 1MiB + capacity: 1MiB + capabilities: internal write-back instruction + *-cache:2 DISABLED + description: L3 cache + physical id: 7 + slot: L3-Cache + capabilities: internal + *-logicalcpu:0 + description: Logical CPU + physical id: 0.1 + width: 64 bits + capabilities: logical + *-logicalcpu:1 + description: Logical CPU + physical id: 0.2 + width: 64 bits + capabilities: logical + *-memory + description: System Memory + physical id: 30 + slot: System board or motherboard + size: 2GiB + *-bank:0 + description: DIMM DDR Synchronous + product: PartNum0 + vendor: Manufacturer0 + physical id: 0 + serial: SerNum0 + slot: DIMM0 + size: 1GiB + width: 64 bits + *-bank:1 + description: DIMM DDR Synchronous + product: PartNum1 + vendor: Manufacturer1 + physical id: 1 + serial: SerNum1 + slot:

[Bug 305723] Re: MTU in 8.10 set to 576/ ignores override/ does not work with a lot of routers
The linux kernel will change the mtu depending on network conditions. ubuntu 8.10 is not picking such a low mtu ... it should be 1500. I have never seen an mtu of 576 being picked. Thank you. Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it without more information. Please include the following additional information, if you have not already done so (pay attention to lspci's additional options), as required by the Ubuntu Kernel Team: 1. Please include the output of the command uname -a in your next response. It should be one, long line of text which includes the exact kernel version you're running, as well as the CPU architecture. 2. Please run the command dmesg dmesg.log after a fresh boot and attach the resulting file dmesg.log to this bug report. 3. Please run the command sudo lspci -vvnn lspci-vvnn.log and attach the resulting file lspci-vvnn.log to this bug report.
