[Bug 307645] Re: Linux Mint freezes after a while

2010-08-11 Thread Rick Gutknecht
Progress update. I changed the acpi setting in /etc/default/grub and my
Acer Aspire Netbook no longer freezes. However, I am also seeing the
side effect of the system not powering off when you select shutdown. I
would appreciate a work around for that if anyone has one. At least it
is a less severe problem at this point. I applied the same change to my
HP Pavillion a404x but it did not fix the problem. It is possible it is
a hardware malfunction as the system was not powering down on system
shutdown when I had Windows installed and it is an older machine. Any
ideas to fix this one would be welcomed.

[Bug 307645] Re: Linux Mint freezes after a while

2010-06-04 Thread Rick Gutknecht
I have been using Mint since Gloria without incident. I recently
installed Isadora on an Acer Aspire One Netbook and an HP Pavillion
a404x and have intermittent problems with it locking up and going to a
blank screen. I have caught it in the act a couple times, first the
screen will flicker then go blank, mouse will remain active for a short
time then everything freezes and only a cold boot will correct the
problem. I had no problems with the previous versions Gloria or Helena
with these machines. I have turned off suspend/hibernate in the power
settings with no relief. I have not applied the ACPI yet that someone
mentioned. That will be my next step. Let me know if you need more
information. Other than this problem I love the new version. Thanks.
Rick

[Bug 307645] Re: Linux Mint freezes after a while

2010-05-25 Thread Raven Lee
I have the latest version and I'm running it installed in Windows on a new Dell
Core-17 machine.
For no reason, it will just lock up. I can move the mouse and that's it. No
control over the keyboard.
Screen remains up.

No error messages before or after. I have to hold the power button for
10 seconds and do a hard shutdown.

Is the Install Into Windows option just buggy?

[Bug 307645] Re: Linux Mint freezes after a while

2010-05-19 Thread Brian Vuyk
I have had this problem on my desktop since ~Ubuntu 8.10 or so, and it's
continued to the latest Ubuntu and Mint releases, although it is
significantly worse in Mint 9 now. I've tried setting 'acpi=off' in my
boot settings, but that stops my mouse from working, so I reverted that
without being able to see if it helped with crashes.

[Bug 307645] Re: Linux Mint freezes after a while

2010-05-17 Thread Experimenter
I had resolved the problem in Ubuntu (both Karmic and Lynx) by uninstalling
compiz and its libraries, while in Mint-Helena the same can be was fixed by
disabling the visual effects. I have tried but have not been able to isolate
which library/plug-in of compiz is causing the problem. The problem is
generally found in desktops and laptops with inadequate GPs.
The acpi solution had failed to work on both my desktops. My laptop handles all
the above mentioned releases very well without any tweaking.
