It seems the manual upgrade worked as I see no errors in the attached log. Can you please post the contents of the /etc/hosts file? I was inspired by something mentioned in Bug 234879. The inspiration made me change /etc/hosts by adding the domain name. See the diff. in the 2 attached files. From the timestamp on /etc/hosts I related the problem to when I added a PCI-card for wireless router connection. Afterwards I tested the upgrade manager with success. Normally to get authorization in the GUI Ubuntu pops up a screen asking for your password. Can you try to run the update proces from a terminal? The command below will simulate the upgrading of the packages. I wonders why my E-mail, which was an answer to the request from 2008-12-15, is not shown in the current dialog. Because of this, I will repeat its contents here: Hey Shanta I tried to click System-Administration-Softwarekilder (i.e.: System - Administration - Software Sources). Which did not cause any application to start. The process observed was: 1. I clicked on Softwarekilder. 2. My mouse cursor changed to a round and rotating cursor. Meanwhile a box with the text Stating Administrativ... was shown in the panel. 3. This was see for about 15 seconds until it turned to be what it was before I did the click. 4. Nothing else happened. In that way I did not have access to Installable from CD-ROM/DVD. A similar behavior was seen when I tried to click System-Administration-Synaptic - pakkehåndtering (I do not what this is called exactly in English, but something like Synaptic - packet management). I also tried it without success after trying to add Authorization through clicking System-Authorization and selecting Manage system configuration. So sorry - I could not try it. Actually I do not know how to authorize myself (although I am the administrator) to use this function. Could you go to System - Administration - Software Sources. Then under Installable from CD-ROM/DVD deselect any cdrom listed.
