My theory is that the DVD is gently scrambled to behave in exactly this way, either because of a geographic region thing or possibly a prod to buy something to make it work. In any case, apologies for the year's delay! This looks like either a xine-lib bug (strangely, totem-gstreamer is referenced) or user error...
