[Bug 324365] Re: DKMS should rebuild modules as soon as new headers are available

2010-02-10 Thread Justin Lebar
Hm...okay. It looks like the problem was that the newest linux-headers
package wasn't installed when my kernel was upgraded.

This could be made much more user-friendly by, for instance, suggesting
in the error that I don't need the kernel source but rather just the
headers. Or by automatically installing the headers for me; afaict,
there's no headers-equivalent to the linux-virtual package. That seems
strange to me.

[Bug 324365] Re: DKMS should rebuild modules as soon as new headers are available

2010-02-10 Thread Justin Lebar
Something like this is happening to me.

I run Ubuntu (the stripped-down VM version) in Virtualbox. I noticed
this morning that my openafs and virtualbox modules weren't loading
properly. It looks like I installed a kernel update on 2/6
(/var/log/dpkg.log attached).

My guess is that dkms can't find the kernel headers. For instance,

jle...@ubuntu-vm:~$ dkms build -m openafs -v 1.4.11

Error! Your kernel source for kernel 2.6.31-19-generic-pae cannot be found at
/lib/modules/2.6.31-19-generic-pae/build or
/lib/modules/2.6.31-19-generic-pae/source.
You can use the --kernelsourcedir option to tell DKMS where it's located.

This is despite the fact that I have the linux-virtual package
installed...

[Bug 324365] Re: DKMS should rebuild modules as soon as new headers are available

2009-02-06 Thread Mario Limonciello
I've not seen any other reports of this (hence why it was so
surprising). I'll close up the bug for now, but keep an eye on the
behavior on your system. If it happens again, as soon as it does,
reopen this bug and repost up snippets of the logs for what changed.

[Bug 324365] Re: DKMS should rebuild modules as soon as new headers are available

2009-02-04 Thread Michael
As I said, this happened when I booted the 2.6.27-11 kernel. I can't
say for sure now whether it happened the first time I booted it or not.
The modules definitely seemed to be rebuilt during boot (the bootsplash
stopped and I got the dkms output on the console).

Has anyone else reported this? If not, perhaps the most sensible course
of action would be for me to wait until it happens again (if it does).
That way I will be able to observe exactly what happens, and you can
tell me anything you would like me to look out for. And you can avoid
wasting too much time on this in the meantime :)

I've looked over every case that is in your term.log's, and the modules were
rebuilt as soon as the headers were available. When (Particularly) was the
last time you remembered this behavior happening?

You can mark this bug as private before you upload them if you have some
personal information in either of the logs. I'm particularly looking for
the order that select packages got installed to look for dependency
problems, or postinstall problems.

2009-02-02 Thread Mario Limonciello
Can you provide the different logs that went with this situation then?
/var/log/dpkg.log and /var/log/apt/term.log ? Perhaps there will be some
insight as to exactly why the postinstall call to build with DKMS failed.

This happened with the VirtualBox (and Nvidia) kernel modules when the
kernel was upgraded to 2.6.27-11. They were rebuilt during boot up.
