[Bug 336923] Re: Need LVDSout quirk for Intel 945GME 8086:27ae

2009-03-03 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
Usually, quirks are applied using the PCI ID (major computer vendors
have their own specific ID for the subsystem). In this case, both the
System and Subsystem IDs are 8086:27ae, which is the generic Intel one,
so disabling LVDS based on that will break all laptops with this
specific ID (looks like among others the Eee 901 has the same PCI ID).
It is possible that one can quirk based on something else, so thank you
for including the output of lshw. I think it is possible to quirk based
on DMI data, so please upload the output of `sudo dmidecode`.

Also, since we're in the bug-fixing stage of the upcoming Ubuntu release
Jaunty, it would be great if you could verify that this is still an
issue there (I bet it is). You can get the latest alpha version
(currently alpha-5) from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/jaunty/ (you
should be able to do all test from a LiveCD without needing to install
Jaunty to your computer).

Ok, Just finished up testing. It is, indeed, still an issue!

It's the same symptoms:

start the client and the screen first boots at 1024x768

open System Preferences Display Settings

In there, Mirror Screens is enabled.

In order to get a larger resolution on the client, I have to do the
following:

uncheck Mirror Screens'
Select Laptop monitor output and manually shut it off in with the radio button
Select the working monitor and manually change the resolution with the
drop-down menu.
click apply, and the monitor is set to the proper resolution.

Here's all the log files:

[Bug 336923] Re: Need LVDSout quirk for Intel 945GME 8086:27ae

2009-03-03 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
Thank you for testing and reporting back so promptly. It is evident that
you have researched this well before reporting this bug, and that really
helps. All the necessary information is now included and a developer can
look at this bug. He/she may ask for more information if some
information that I didn't think about is needed.

Btw, I read somewhere that the intel driver assumes that all the mobile
chipsets (all the ones with M in the chipset name, like 965GM, 945GME,
855GM, GM45, etc.) have an LVDS connected as they are meant for laptops
and are used for that in the vast majority of the cases. I think the
current recommended resolution is to quirk out models that don't adhere
to this, but I'm not sure.

Working with a Disklessworkstations.com 1520 PXE Atom thinclient.

There is no LVDS output on the thinclient, but it's inclusion on boot of
Ubuntu causes the client to come up at 1024x768. In System Preferences
Screen Resolution, the the monitors appeared with Mirror Screens.
LVDS needs to be quirked out entirely.

Thank you for reporting this bug and helping making ubuntu better. Could
you please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn` as a separate attachment
(we need those numeric PCI IDs from there which you didn't include in
your lspci output above). And while you're at it, for completeness, we
would also like /var/log/Xorg.0.log from when you are do not have the
Ignore-LVDS part in your xorg.conf.

Finally, what version of ubuntu are you using?
