[Bug 347034] Re: External Drive not recognised at boot
Hi, I tried an identical drive (they were bought on the same day) and the second one works fine. On the other hand, my drive which fails in karmic works fine on a lucid laptop and also there under Windows. So in my case it seems to be a hardware problem in relation to the *specific* combination of USB disk and the intel mainboard D945GCLF2. [Bug 347034] Re: External Drive not recognised at boot
If I look at my Synaptic installation (screenshot attached), it appears that the incorrect linux-restricted-modules-generic is installed and in need of an upgrade. Is this any concern? ** Attachment added: "Screenshot-Synaptic Package Manager .png" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/26447675/Screenshot-Synaptic%20Package%20Manager%20.png -- External Drive not recognised at boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/347034 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 347034] Re: External Drive not recognised at boot
May-7-2009: Latest updates from ubuntu included a partial upgrade to Linux 2.6.28-12. Linux generic (not sure which version) was removed. When I restarted after the update, the external drive was recognised. I don't know if this is the permanent fix, or if more work is required, but this represents definite progress. [Bug 347034] Re: External Drive not recognised at boot
JM. Candelay - glad the majority of your problems are solved. Unfortunately, your first sentence, "installing Ntfs configuration tool, and starting system first then switching on external drive second solved this one for me ..." is exactly the problem that is reported. Like you, if I start the system first, then either plug in, or turn on, the external USB drive, then the drive automounts and works correctly. The issue is that in previous versions (8.04 - 8.10), the drive was recognised when the system was booted without having to either plug it in or turn it on. I want that behaviour back. I am getting the same error as reported here: modprobe: FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.28-generic/modules.dep No such file or directory and don't know if that has something to do with the problem. installing Ntfs configuration tool, and starting system first then switching on external drive second solved this one for me and I got excited a bit too fast, some things will always be a bit different at first and this is a superb version Good Luck J. -- External Drive not recognised at boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/347034 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Also wanted to report this bug. Doesn't look like a fix has been pushed out yet? I don't know if this helps or not, but in post: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=7105365#post7105365 The poster is reporting that they are getting the following error at bootup: modprobe: FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.28-generic/modules.dep No such file or directory I'm getting the same error and I'm wondering if it is the cause of the problem? [Bug 347034] Re: External Drive not recognised at boot
I'm not sure if I am supposed to do something with Brian's entry. I'm a relative newbie, so if there is something that I need to do, then I will need specific instructions. I don't know if this helps, but from a cold boot: 1. The BIOS boots and appears okay. 2. The GRUB menu comes up and proceeds to the next stage. 3. I get an ATA1 soft reset error. Not sure what that is about. 4. I get a Fatal Error. There is a module that doesn't load. The message goes too fast for me to read the details of the message. 5. The ubuntu splash screen starts up. If someone can tell me how to pause between 4 and 5 above, then I would be able to read the details of the error message that is displayed in 4. That might provide enough information to correct the problem. Please note that on this machine, the external drive was recognised at boot-up, so there is some change between 8.10 and 9.04 that is causing the problem. As requested: uname -a Linux ballemco-01 2.6.28-11-generic #37-Ubuntu SMP Mon Mar 23 16:40:00 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux Requested dmseg.log is attached. I'll send lspci-vnn.log on next comment Please note that the USB drive is attached and is currently functional (I had previously turned it off, then turned it on again, which causes it to be recognised). The issue is that it used to be recognised at boot-up, without the need to turn it off and on again. [Bug 347034] Re: External Drive not recognised at boot
What is frustrating is that I had to do a clean install. I did the installation from Alpha-5 and the USB drive was instantly recognised. When I upgraded (I assume to Alpha 6) through the Update Manager (partial upgrade option), the USB drive was no longer instantly recognised. I'm not sure what changed, but this might help identify the problem. [Bug 347034] Re: External Drive not recognised at boot
9.04 Alpha 6 - Connected USB drives, HDD or Pen drives do not mount at boot up. As above turning off or disconnecting and reconecting cause any attached USB storage medium to mount. Though not a show stopper this is inconvient, especially when access to devices is limited. -- External Drive not recognised at boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/347034 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
