[Bug 358943] Re: Harddisk stops working after wakeup
Hi Michele, This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/lucid. If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications-Accessories-Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report. apport-collect -p linux 358943 Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream- testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance. [This is an automated message. [Bug 358943] Re: Harddisk stops working after wakeup
I have experienced similar issues (ATA exception at resume) and they were triggered by the hdparm calls at resume. For those with these errors, please try either editing /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/95hdparm-apm to not call resume_hdparm_apm, or temporarily rename /sbin/hdparm to /sbin/hdparm.orig. And also delete /etc/pm/sleep.d/99laptop-mode which really should not be there any longer (bug #384875). -- Harddisk stops working after wakeup https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/358943 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 358943] Re: Harddisk stops working after wakeup
I changed the -B argument of hdparm to 254 but without success (in every 90-hdparm.sh). HD always stops working after some seconds and sometime doesn't restart. Now I switched to Kubuntu Karmic Koala, the HD stops as before and restarts fine, but I used Karmic on battery very few time. -- Harddisk stops working after wakeup https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/358943 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 358943] Re: Harddisk stops working after wakeup
With your brief testing, it hasn't broken. Assuming that it doesn't break, it would be clear that it is not a laptop-mode-tools bug because the version of laptop-mode-tools in Karmic Koala and Jaunty Jackalope is the same. -- Harddisk stops working after wakeup https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/358943 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

If I read comment 7 correctly, the problem appeared originally with laptop-mode-tools disabled, so it is most likely a kernel issue. ** Package changed: laptop-mode-tools (Ubuntu) = linux (Ubuntu) -- Harddisk stops working after wakeup https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/358943 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

My bad. ata2 is the CD ROM. With the 80 GB drive, suspend resume seems to be working fine. I had not encountered this error with earlier versions of the ubuntu with ata1 or ata2. [Bug 358943] Re: Harddisk stops working after wakeup
I just looked into the logs you had provided. * You hdd support IDLE IMMEDIATE UNLOAD. So, are you using hdapsd ? If yes, you'll also see unloads when you physically move the laptop. I'm not sure if this increases the Load Cycle Count. * You smartctl log doesn't show the Load Cycle Count value. So I'm not sure what the health of your HDD is. If you are too power conscious, use LMT to do Power Management for your hdd. If you are too hdd health conscious, disable Power Management in LMT for your hdd. -- Harddisk stops working after wakeup https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/358943 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 358943] Re: Harddisk stops working after wakeup
First of all I did a full backup of my HD :-) Then I did a full smart check and no error was reported. Now my laptop, when running on battery, spin down the HD every 8-10 seconds of inactivity; this power management policy is too aggressive as I already said in a top post. Am I the only one with this problem? Manually set the hdparm -B 254 solve the problem, but i don't know which software sets the default policy, if LMT or other acpi tool. hdparm -I always displays: Recommended acoustic management value: 254, current value: 128 Why? -- Harddisk stops working after wakeup https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/358943 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 358943] Re: Harddisk stops working after wakeup
Michele, Can you post the output of the following command ? grep POWERMGMT /etc/laptop-mode/laptop-mode.conf Is your kernel error message resolved ? BTW, here's what hdparam says -B Set Advanced Power Management feature, if the drive supports it. A low value means aggressive power management and a high value means better performance. Possible settings range from values 1 through 127 (which permit spin-down), and values 128 through 254 (which do not permit spin- down). The highest degree of power management is attained with a setting of 1, and the highest I/O performance with a setting of 254. A value of 255 tells hdparm to disable Advanced Power Management altogether on the drive (not all drives support disabling it, but most do). By default, LMT, when ON_BATTERY, will set it to 1. If you don't like the power saving behavior for your hard drive, you can disable it in /etc/laptop-mode/laptop-mode.conf -- Harddisk stops working after wakeup https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/358943 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 358943] Re: Harddisk stops working after wakeup
I have the exact same problem with dell 700m 160 GB samsung PATA drive. After resume dmesg has the exact same pattern as reported earlier snip ata1: device not ready (errno=-16), forcing hardreset post I recompiled 2 versions of 2.6.28.9 vanilla kernel so that I get drives as /dev/hda* with one and /dev/sda* with another. I am getting the EXACT same behavior with ALL kernels. Also, I used libata.noacpi=1 when drives are mounted as /dev/sda* but did not change the behavior. The drive was fine till I upgraded to Jaunty. -G Ritesh Raj Sarraf wrote: I had suspected this. I'm not sure though whether it is a bad hardware of a suspend bug. LMT, by itself, doesn't do much.
