[Bug 390158] Re: [MSI MS-7329] suspend/resume failure [non-free: nvidia]

2010-03-12 Thread Indie
I've tried the latest Lucid build and that produces very similar
results. The main thing I notice about it is that it's using the nouveau
driver which is what I think is responsible for what I'm seeing.

Again, I ran the test in single user mode. It wasn't possible to remove
or disable the nouveau driver. Running a pm_trace produces the same
results as before. But seen as it resumes from suspend that's of no use?

When it comes out of suspend, unlike previously, the power light on my
LCD monitor turns green and pops up with the message No Signal. I'm
guessing this is down to the nouveau driver, it's sending the signal to
the monitor to turn back on but it's not turning on the output. My Media
Live system is connected via an HDMI port on the back to a DVI port on
my monitor. Looking at the dmesg output generated by the nouveau driver
it recognises this. A few seconds later the monitor then goes into
automatic suspend, the led turns orange. Everything on it appears to
work correctly, USB keyboard etc.

From Google I did come across a windows driver nVIDIA ForceWare 81.98
and in the change log of bug fixes it mentioned GeForce 6150/6100,
Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005: The display remains inactive when
resuming from Suspend mode. So I don't know if there's anything special
that needs to be done with this particular chipset to wake it up?

As another test, I tried vbetool dpms off which works though when I
try vbetool dpms on it doesn't turn the monitor back on. However for
some reason when I did vbetool vbemode set 283 the monitor turned
itself back on though the screen was messed up - the left handside was
now in the center of the screen and it scrolls off the bottom. I just
thought I'd try something to manually set the resolution in the hope
that it would pop back into life. This though did not have any affect
after a resume from suspend.

The change I've seen, the monitor now turning back on after resume but
still not having a signal, I'd image would be due to the nouveau driver.
Should it not 'work' without this?

I found a post about suspend http://forum-
en.msi.com/index.php?topic=120345.0 ,presumably it's on windows, saying
that it started to work correctly in BIOS 1.63 which is the same version
I'm using. So I'm guessing something's been missed out when the system
resumes from suspend for the display to not wake up.

[Bug 390158] Re: [MSI MS-7329] suspend/resume failure [non-free: nvidia]

2010-03-12 Thread Indie
I’m surprised that suspend doesn’t work for the GeForce 6150 LE (C51PVG)
given that it’s been around since 2006. Also that it’s used in quite a
few motherboards that are designed for use in a HTPC where having the
suspend functionality would be desirable.

Even though in my previous comment I mentioned that the latest BIOS,
1.63, supposedly fixes suspend issues for Windows, I’m wondering if it
simply masks a problem that Windows/nVidia driver is able to deal with.
I don’t know the how the internals of ACPI/suspend work in the Linux
Kernel but I’m wondering if the suspend issue I’m experiencing is due to
a BIOS bug?

Does the kernel use a BIOS call to enter S3 suspend or is this done via
some direct hardware manipulation? On resume from suspend does the
kernel/BIOS call some VGA/VBE/Graphics function to re-enable the
Graphics hardware and display. My thinking behind all this is whatever
Graphics function in BIOS is being called isn’t doing it’s job correctly
– thus in my case the display never comes back on. Is anyone able to
clarify the low level workings of ACPI/Suspend and if it is the case
that the BIOS is supposed to do something to kick the graphics subsystem
back into life then I’ll raise a ticket with MSI.

[Bug 390158] Re: [MSI MS-7329] suspend/resume failure [non-free: nvidia]

2010-03-05 Thread Indie
I've got the same problem on a MSI Media Live
(http://eu.msi.com/index.php?func=proddescprod_no=1113maincat_no=134cat2_no=636cat3_no=313)
that use the MS-7329 motherboard though I'm using 9.10. I've tried both
i386 and x86_64 versions and they both have the same results - it goes
into suspend fine then appears to wake up but nothing happens. The
keyboard is USB and does not work, Ctrl-Alt-Del doesn't do anything. I
have to press the power button it for 5 seconds to turn it off. I've
also tried with openSUSE 11.2 and that has the same problem. I'm using
the latest BIOS 1.63.

Then the other day I had a look in the BIOS and saw that under Power
Management it was set to use S1 (POS) so I switched to S3 (STR), the
other option was Auto. There was also another option about POSTing Video
BIOS on S3 resume.

In single user mode without X or anything running I ran s2ram, I had to
try various options as some would just cause it to resume straight away
for some reason. It did eventually go into suspend and when I pressed
the power button it did come back on BUT the screen was blank. I tried
various combinations of options with s2ram and using i386/x86_64
versions and they all had the same result. Though as opposed to when it
was set to S1, this time the keyboard was still alive. I've got a
program that controls the LCD display on the case that displays the time
so I know if it's alive or not. The USB keyboard does now respond and
I'm able to get suspend it again/reboot. But there is now display!

In answer to:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspendHibernateResume

-Is it reproducible?
It behaves the same way every time.
-Did it work before?
I've never had suspend working on this machine before, not under Linux and
I've never installed Windows on it.
-Do you end up with flashing caps-lock or similar?
No, when the BIOS is set to S3 mode the Caps/Num work along with the rest of
the keyboard
-Hibernate specific information
I've tried hibernate before but my main issue is to get suspend to work.
Hibernate did work, from what I can remember, to the degree of what S3 does
now. It restores but the screen goes blank when it thaws.

I have tried the pm_trace method but that didn't show anything, it only
came back with a Magic number and no hash match so that was useless.

Can't the kernel set the mode whether it be S1/S3 instead of leaving it
to the BIOS?

Is there a way to kick the screen into life?

Re: [Bug 390158] Re: [MSI MS-7329] suspend/resume failure [non-free: nvidia]

2010-03-05 Thread Indie
I found that pm_trace didn't show up anything because I was running a custom
live version and hadn't included the contents of /boot to save space.

I've done two tests:
1) using the Ubuntu i386 Live CD - 2.6.31-17
2) using a custom x86_64 version which has a later kernel - 2.6.31.19

One thing I did notice is that the caps lock led doesn't work from the
terminal, it still enables caps, from within X it's fine. Another thing,
when it resumes from suspend, if you don't take too long, my monitor will go
into standby even though it was already on (green led on the front). When
the systems resumes from suspend I'm able to enter text via the keyboard to
get a dmesg output and cleanly reboot the system.

The dmesg_*_thaw.txt is the dmesg output when the system resumes from
suspend and the dmesg_*_reboot.txt file is the dmesg output once the system
has been rebooted.

From 2.6.31-17:
[1.049029] Magic number: 0:436:478
[1.049076] hash matches
/build/buildd/linux-2.6.31/drivers/base/power/main.c:382

From 2.6.31-19:
[2.258795] Magic number: 0:291:740
[2.258842] hash matches
/build/buildd/linux-2.6.31/drivers/base/power/main.c:419

Does this help in finding the cause of the problem?

It will definitely help developers to find the fix or help you to detect that
you don't really have real bug. Please, pay special attention to the Encrypted
Home-Swap issue and the flashing caps-lock.

Information below, will also help you

I also have this problem (on MSI Media Live barebone machine, which uses
this motherboard). Have flashed BIOS (to 1.63), and still doesn't help.

After holding the power button down, on the next startup, the machine
fails to even POST, needing another restart. As of last night, the
machine isn't even turning on, so will be buying a new motherboard for
this!
