I can reproduce what is described in bug report 70914, i.e. there is
almost no lag when two text fields are selected, even with anti-aliasing
turned on.

The lag disappeared for me as well when the text field was moved far
from its original position.

With 4.1.3.2, 64-bit Linux Mint 15

[Bug 411542]

2013-05-29 Thread Gorka Navarrete
The problem persists in LO 4.1.0.0.beta1 in Ubuntu 13.04 64-bit in a
fairly modern hardware (i7, 8GB RAM).

I don't see a significant improvement after disabling AA (In Tools >
Options > View > Screen font antialiasing).

Reducing the size of the box containing the text does improve a lot the
speed.

In my opinion, this should be labeled as a high important bug as it
creates a very bad impression on people using LO for the first time.

2012-10-25 Thread Mark Jackson
I can confirm this still exists in 12.04 64bit running LibreOffice 3.5.4.2.
I'm running a Core i5-2500K with 8Gig RAM and an nVidia GT440.

As a simple test, create a new doc, place a large "smiley" object, zoom in.
Now scroll up / down with (and without) AA enabled to see the difference in
speed.

[Bug 411542]

2012-09-10 Thread voltaic
I first became aware of this bug on LibreOffice 3.5.6 (official Arch
Linux build) on two separate computers.

I also confirm the issue persists with LibreOffice 3.6.1 on Arch Linux.
Disabling anti-aliasing for graphics output significantly improves
move/resize performance for text and graphics boxes. With anti-aliasing
enabled, move/resize is laggy and painfully slow as reported numerous
times on Launchpad.

The machines I tested this on both have Intel GM45 chipsets (Core 2 with
GMA graphics) with Intel xf86 drivers versions 2.20.0 through 2.20.6.
Since Roland reported the issue for both AMD and NVIDIA graphics, I
assume this is not graphics drivers related.

Example presentation

Moving or resizing text boxes is very slow in Impress when image
antialiasing is enabled. I thought this old bug was already reported but
it seems not. However, I'm not an Ubuntu user but I saw a bug report
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org/+bug/411542)
that deals with the same issue.

To reproduce : open the attached presentation example, and, with image
antialiasing enabled in the LibreOffice options, try to move or resize
the box which contains the text "Example (slow)". This operation is very
slow even on a fast machine. If you disable image antialiasing in the
LibreOffice options then the move / resize operation becomes very fast
and usable.

I also discovered that reducing the box size around the text greatly
improves the speed (with antialiasing enabled). This can be checked on
the example by moving the box which contains the text "Example (fast)".

The bug appears (at least) on LibreOffice 3.4.3 and 3.5.1, on Linux
(Official build with deb packages on Debian Squeeze) or Windows XP SP3
(Official build). And since I have two computers with ATI and Nvidia
graphic cards, it seems to be independent of the hardware.

OpenOffice.org 3.1 in Karmic seems to be noticably slower than
OpenOffice.org 3.0. My suspicion is that this is because of the new

- * Moving text boxes around is laggy.
- * Re-arranging slide order is terribly slow and after I had moved the slide
to its new location I waited about 60 seconds for it to finally land.

[Bug 411542] Re: Impress very slow due to Anti-Aliasing

2011-09-16 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Jono Bacon, unfortunately not enough information is available to work on
this issue. Regarding your comments:

" * Moving text boxes around is laggy."

Could you please be more specific regarding laggy? What did you move
specifically in the attached file and how long did it take you to do so?
How long do you expect it to take?

" * Re-arranging slide order is terribly slow and after I had moved the
slide to its new location I waited about 60 seconds for it to finally
land."

Which slide specifically did you move and where did you move it to?

[Bug 411542] migrating packaging from OpenOffice.org to Libreoffice

2011-09-15 Thread Björn Michaelsen
[This is an automated message.]
There are no new official OpenOffice.org releases in Ubuntu packaging anymore
=> Won't Fix

If the problem persists, please mark this bug as "also affects project
Libreoffice" or "also affects distribution Libreoffice (Ubuntu)" if that
has not happened already.

Please leave references to upstream OpenOffice.org bugs in place to
allow cross pollination.

RE: [Bug 411542] Re: [upstream] OpenOffice.org 3.1 Impress Very Slow due to AA

2010-11-03 Thread orosen

In general it works better, however oddly enough, the larger the size of
the text box i try to drag, the larger the slow down i experience.

For example, i opened a new text box with the text "Hello.".

If i drag the small text box, it works OK.

If i expand the size of the text box (without adding text, just pulling
the edges), the dragging process becomes much, much slower.

When the text box size is about the size of the presentation sheet, the
slow down is really lagged.

I'm using ubuntu 10.10, all updated, on the same HW as before.

Ori

Even though "upstream" appears in the title of this bug I can't seem to
find a link to an upstream bug report. Is there an upstream report?

I have had this issue for several years and can confirm its also occurs

problem disappear but leaves text looking very ugly.

2010-04-23 Thread drieteenmeeuw
When I experienced this behaviour some weeks ago in OOo 3.2.0 (in Fedora

~/.openoffice.org/3/ (e.g. to user.old). However the behaviour is back
now and I am not sure if doing the same renaming thing is working this
time.

2009-11-23 Thread Janne Moren
I can confirm it's present in 3.1.1 as installed in Karmic. Turning off
AA seems to resolve it for me (but results in less than great line
drawings of course). With AA on Impress is completely unusable.

It seems it triggers a redraw of images every time you "wiggle" the ui
in various ways, and that redraw ends up taking a looong time. Looking
with ps it spends a huge amount of time running gs and convert, and
spawns dozens and dozens of ooffice zombie processes as it goes.

[Bug 411542] Re: [upstream] OpenOffice.org 3.1 Impress Very Slow due to AA

2009-11-15 Thread aymspig
I tried all possible combinations: AA off Hard Acc off, AA on Hard Acc
off, AA off Hard Acc on, AA on Hard Acc on. I raised the memory
allocated for each presentation and slide to respectively 128 Mo and 20
Mo. It was very hard to use Impress 3.1 which was very slow and often
consumed 100% of one proc. My presentation featured 33 slides with some
.eps figures embedded. I may say the problem was preventing me from
using Open Office Impress to edit my presentation. I am using Ubuntu
9.10 on a asus8jc laptop (1GHz RAM - Dual Core Intel 1.83 GHz). I was
using some days before Impress 3.0.1 without any problems, I guess I am
going to use install that version again. I really need Impress since my
presentations are now fully ODT files and I got used to this lovely
software. I started on Ubuntu 9.10 with totally a fresh install this
week end. Thank you for your attention and you precious help on that
bug.

Jono,

Do you still have this problem with openoffice.org 1:3.1.1-1ubuntu2 or
1:3.1.1-1ubuntu1~jaunty1? I think it might be fixed now or at least it
doesn't seem to be nearly as severe as what I remember.

I tested with 3.0.1 and doing the same thing can't reproduce the issue
on it so this does appear to actually be an issue with OOo 3.1.0
somehow. I should have OOo 3.1.1~rc1 uploaded after alpha 4 release

2009-08-11 Thread Jono Bacon
Try the presentation that I have just attached. First, ensure that AA is
switched on in Tools->Options->OpenOffice.org->View, then load this
presentation and try moving some of the slide items around. Also, try
picking up a slide in the left slides pane and move your mouse until you
see the outline, now waggle the mouse around a little and place the
slide in a new location - this should really slow OpenOffice.org to a
grind and hammer the CPU.

Oh wow, I think I was just able to reproduce the issue myself, when
dragging a slide down in the slide list it seems to be fine, but when I
tried dragging a slide to a higher position I got the really weird
slowdown. I am running on 9.04 with intel driver gma4500 graphics
(ThinkPad X200).

I'll try reverting to 3.0.1 to test and see how it goes.

Jono,

Can you also attach a document exhibiting the issue and explain how to
easily see the issue? It is possible that it is an issue in OOo but I
have seen other xserver related issues in the past that sometimes just
showed up in OOo. I am still running Ubuntu 9.04 at the moment with OOo
3.1.0 from the ppa so I may be able to see if it shows up with an older
version of xorg also.

Thanks,

[Bug 411542] Re: OpenOffice.org 3.1 Impress Very Slow

2009-08-11 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi Jono,

Hmm, to treat this as an Xorg performance bug, we need some more
specific data to go on, although I'm not sure what performance data can
be gathered from openoffice. My vague guess would be that this is some
intermediate library between openoffice and X (cairo??). But maybe we
can just push it upstream and see what they suggest.

But to start with can you please run 'apport-collect 411542', which will
attach the various data we need for X.org bug reports?

Also, are you able to reproduce this bug in any other applications
besides openoffice? That might help in identifying the cause if it is a
shared library or something.

Impress is noticeably faster and acceptable to use.

[Bug 411542] [NEW] OpenOffice.org 3.1 Impress Very Slow

2009-08-10 Thread Jono Bacon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

OpenOffice.org 3.1 in Karmic seems to be noticably slower than
OpenOffice.org 3.0. My suspicion is that this is because of the new
anti-aliased rendering. Some examples of how it is slow:

 * Moving text boxes around is laggy.
 * Re-arranging slide order is terribly slow and after I had moved the slide to
its new location I waited about 60 seconds for it to finally land.

I tested the OpenOffice.org 3.1 in Jaunty with similar problems.
