If in this last case lame is hanging/frozen and not just very slow, this is likely to be another bug. I wasn't as precise as I should have been in my last comment: in fact, lame doesn't crash, but the ETA doesn't progress any further. So technically, it's freezing. I further noticed that this behavior cannot be reproduced on my laptop machine running Feisty as well. The problem only occurs on my server running the Feisty server edition though I cannot imagine blaming the server kernel for the fault. I'll continue observing the issue, do further testing and consider bug reporting on the lame mailing-list. I can confirm both that this bug persists in lame 3.96.1-2ubuntu1 under Feisty (as a matter of fact, on my system lame grinds to a virtual halt) and is fixed in 3.97-0.0 which I grabbed and backported from Gutsy. Consequently, the bug should disappear with the upcoming final release of Gutsy. Seems like I was reporting too early: Another CD fails again, encoding with lame 3.97 just stops in the middle of the process. The only thing that helps is aborting lame and re-trying. Of course, this is nothing but a temporary solution.
