2009-10-17 Thread Steve Langasek
You don't have a /var/log/apt/term.log.1.gz? The logfile you've
attached is clearly truncated, because something had to happen /before/
this to put grub in an inconsistent state, and
/var/log/apt/term.log.1.gz is where the standard rotation policy would
put this old log.

If the log is really not there anymore, then we have no other option
than to close this bug report as invalid. I don't think there's any
point in trying to reproduce this in a VM, having a package fail like
that is always a corner case and you're unlikely to hit the same problem
twice.

2009-10-16 Thread Taras
I wanted to test Karmic from the flash drive when I had extra time

After I installed it, grub 2 overwritten my grub 1, so I could not boot
without the flash drive attached.

Read up some stuff on-line (can't fully retrace it, sorry)

Found a route to install grub 1 on to the usb. Booted in to Karmic, went
to synaptic and tried installing grub.

After that got the error.

Subsequently needed to boot, so went through grub restore on Jaunty.
Succeed. Then edited menu.lst with entries for karmic. No problems since
than.

Attaching the log as requested.

The log you attached is not the log I'm looking for - you've attached
the current log, which matches the one that came with the bug report.
We need the older ones (term.log*, not term.log).

2009-10-15 Thread Steve Langasek
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and help to improve
Ubuntu.

The only mention of the grub package in the attached dpkg log is this:

Log started: 2009-10-09 02:31:57
dpkg: error processing grub (--remove):
Package is in a very bad inconsistent state - you should
reinstall it before attempting a removal.

How did it get into this state? Can you show the older
/var/log/apt/term.log* files from this system, so we can see where the
grub package went wrong in the first place?

To resolve the problem on your own system, you will have to do as the
error message says, and reistall grub first (sudo apt-get install grub),
then reinstall grub-pc, letting grub be removed (sudo apt-get install
grub-pc).
