This is 2008 March and I've just upgraded from Edgy to Gutsy (v7.10). And this problem is hitting me. It was not there in Edgy earlier. The description _exactly_ matches what others have described above, therefore I am not adding any new description. For me the web interface works on Edgy, so the CUPS there seems to have it fixed. This bug still evident in xubuntu Live CD on 2006-09-21. Not sure if that helps anyone, or the exact relationship between Ubuntu and xubuntu. Quite a nasty bug is this, has great potential to make people who're showcasing Ubuntu (and derivatives) look stupid. Does this problem exist in an installed copy of Ubuntu 6.06, or just on the live CD? No point installing Ubuntu 6.06 if a printer can't be added... I'm not sure why this is listed as Medium and not Severe. Not being able to set up any printer at all is a fatal flaw, especially for a distribution designed/released for long term support. Is Ubuntu 6.06 still in beta or what? Is there a fix or workaround for this bug yet? I also ran into this on the 6.06 LiveCD. I suggest raising the importance of the bug, as it seems related to the inability to add a printer through the standard Gnome GUI utility for that. For me, my JetDirect printer was not detected, and then after completing the wizard, adding it failed silently, with no new printer appearing.
