I can confirm this is similar on my CQ50-100EM. After boot, I always have to press the wireless button to enable it. The light then flickers between orange and blue. I've done some minor investigation and it seems that while the LED is blue, my wifi is connected at 48Mb/s (according to 'iwconfig'). After a while of being idle it drops to 1Mb/s and the LED turns orange. When it was working, for me at least, the light in the button was blipping between blue and orange as a sign of network activity, but the same light-button for wifi on/off function doesn't do anything. I think there is a hardware bug in either the button or the AR5007 wifi adapter, since there are similar problems with the wifi card and connection issues with HP's own software for this wifi card. It is reported in the meta bug number 461419.
