2010-06-10 Thread Saravanan S PAJANCOA
Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid also still have this problem
Chipset in the computer is
Intel 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated Graphics

Hence following the instruction given in the below website
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Lucidi8xxFreezes
Hanging frequency is low now, but getting good screen resolution atleast.

Workaround done is given below
Replaced boot parameters quiet splash with i915.modeset=1

Then given the below command
sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
In the file that opens copied the below content.

Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
Driver "intel"
Option "DRI" "off"
EndSection

Select File, Save, File, Quit. Restart computer.

Thank you. The machine I had with the problem has subsequently died and
the problem does not occur on newer chipsets.

[Bug 477918] Re: hang in Karmic Koala

2010-04-23 Thread Jeremy Foshee
Hi James,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it
recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the
latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal
(Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach
updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 477918

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be
great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue.
Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the
upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be
done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the
bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.
Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

[This is an automated message. Apologies if it has reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 477918] Re: hang in Karmic Koala

2009-12-19 Thread James Cobban
I can telnet into the system with the frozen UI and nothing looks at all
unusual. top shows everything running fine, with the various processes
as idle as you would expect when no input can get into the processes
from the keyboard or mouse. When the freeze occurs the only thing I can
do to recover is sudo reboot.

I have examined the logs and from my limited experience of linux I can
see nothing whatsoever out of the ordinary. In the main message log,
for example there are typically no messages whatsoever for several HOURS
prior to the message generated by the sudo reboot command.

All I want is for somebody to tell me what documentation to collect!

I tried changing the boot to "nomodeset". This restores the

U r correct. The suggestion in Comment #9 is applicable only if grub2 is used.
If grub is used the below command can be used
sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

Before I start changing something in a system configuration file I
really like to understand what I am doing. So bear with me.

There is no grub.cfg file in my configuration. Rather the equivalent
information appears in menu.lst. I believe this has to do with whether
grub 2 or 1 is used. I don't know much about either version or what I
would need to do to migrate. It has taken me long enough to learn how
to manipulate menu.lst. I would rather not have to complicate my life
by learning an alternative configuration technique. Looking at my copy
of menu.lst I see the text that you suggest changing. Specifically the
menu.lst entry for the Karmic Koala kernel is:

titleUbuntu 9.10, kernel 2.6.31-14-generic
root(hd1,0)
kernel/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31-14-generic
root=UUID=f900070e-2701-4360-98c3-68bc817d012b ro quiet splash
initrd/boot/initrd.img-2.6.31-14-generic
quiet

I see the release note item "No Xv support for Intel 82852/855GM video
chips with KMS" which suggests "nomodeset" although the problems
reported here are completely unrelated to what I am observing. It took
me a lot of hunting around to understand what was actually being
suggested, as the vast majority of relevant pages just assumed that
everybody already knows what KMS was about.

Please correct me if I am misunderstanding this: In Karmic Koala screen
mode setting has been moved by default from X11 down into the kernel in
order to fix a number of problems. However it would appear that there
are some minor problems in the kernel code with respect to some Intel
video chips. The chipset on my computer is even older than the ones
mentioned in the 9.10 release notes. Changing the kernel setting to
"nomodeset" forces the old functionality in X11 to be used rather than
the new kernel code.

I have not observed any pattern to the freezes. On a couple of
occasions the system has even frozen while suspended, so it clearly has
nothing to do with what I am doing at the time.
