This is not an appropriate way to declare a package obsolete. If you
think a package should not be used, file a bug to get it removed from
the archive and *then* invalidate the bugs.

2010-10-31 Thread Phillip Susi
The powernowd package is obsolete, please do not use it. CPU frequency
scaling is now handled by the kernel, so if you still have issues on a
modern release, file a bug against the linux package.

2010-04-14 Thread Andrei Coman
The bug still lives in lucid. I have a freshly installed lucid x64 system and
after i enter my password the computer freezes.
CPU: AMD Sempron 3000+
Mobo: Gigabyte K8NS (rev 2) with F21A BIOS (the latest). I didn't find anything
related to cool quiet in BIOS.

As a work-around I've disabled the ondemand and powernowd services from
recovery mode (hold SHIFT while booting, right after GRUB takes control,
an select recovery mode with a netroot shell. Install rcconf, run it and
disable the previously mentioned services).

A workaround (which I am using currently): disable the feature
completely in the BIOS, so the driver will not load even if powernowd is
started. This is much more robust than removing the package (and having
it added again during an upgrade).

Due wath happenes with both powernowd and cpufreqd, it seems to be a

[Bug 48792] Re: freezes pc when launched

2007-04-29 Thread Cesar Eduardo Barros
Another datapoint:

When upgrading from edgy to feisty, the upgrade manager (running on KDE,
if it makes any difference) somehow decided it would be a good idea to
install powernowd. In the middle of the configure phase, it was started,
and a few seconds later the computer crashed (no video output; the
monitor entered its powersaving mode). This had already happened before,
when I experimented with powernowd (which I uninstalled after I found
out it made the computer crash). Only that this time it left the
computer unbootable; for some reason, update-initramfs runs several
times during the upgrade (meaning the .bak file is useless), and
something (I'm guessing mdadm) got confused (probably because it hadn't
been configured yet before the initrd was generated) and booting stopped
in the waiting for root device line. Luckly, I could still boot with
the older 2.6.17-10 kernel, which was untouched at that point (mdadm
later regenerated every initrd it could find), and finished configuring
everything (and, of course, removed powernowd).

The motherboard is an Asus M2V, and the CPU is an AMD Athlon(tm) 64
Processor 3200+

I can confirm also powernowd is the culprit for a Gigabyte GA-K8NSXNP
motherboard, AMD 64 3200+/2.2GHz. I think I disabled it when I
installed Dapper, and haven't had a problem since, but would like to
reduce power consumption. It was a bastard initially troubleshooting.,
had to disabled lots of stuff until I found powernowd. If you want to
actually do something about it, I'm happy to build kernels test, I
think it freezes when powernowd asks the kernel to change the processor
speed.

Simple to disable once install, but with a read only cd i'm stuck :)

Hardware is an Asus A8N motherboard with an Nvidia nforce4 chipset.

I can provide any information you might ask for to help debug this. I'm
a strong techie, but more or less a zero when it comes to the kernel. I
once typed the kernel debug trap keystroke combination by mistake. That
was fun.

Anyhow, let me know what I can do to help debug this.
